I'd ban doctors if their only function is to kill, maim, or even to look 'macho'  
Look what damage cars do......

"Killed is killed, doesn't matter what tool is used" but some tools make it easier to kill..... hence the guns's invention.

So do we want a society that kills efficiently?

Who doesn't remember car jacking? Wasn't a big deal in Texas , but Louisiana was a lot different. Finally, the governor told the people,
Okay, someone jerk the door open, shoot him.

Surely this refers largely to cancer, heart-attacks, obesity, etc.
The Wiki link doesn't mention cause of death.

If the link referred to death by shootings and the results were basically the same, then it could be said that;

The UK population can't 'defend' themselves with guns.
The US population can 'defend' themselves with guns.

But (if) the results are largely the same.... guns don't really make a difference when it comes to 'protecting' one's own life?
