I am using the shocks that came with the kit.  The swingarm is standard length but was modified by RYCA to fit a tire on an 18" wheel.  Then I had to modify it some more to get sufficient clearance, as shown in the Double RYCA build thread.

See reply #142 here: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1297565987/135  This belt adjustment procedure is something you'll want to know.

Ryan tells me the shocks are 11" compressed and 13" extended.

I thought about using buttonheads too, but these were quicker and have a  little more clearance.

I have already read your entire build. Nice swing arm repair, BTW.  Smiley
You're A&P?

I intend to use longer shocks, but for me- more importantly- something with slightly more adjustability. Or better adjustability. So I can set
my preload a little more accurate. I don't expect precision steering, or line holding ability from this chassis.....or the tires, but keeping rubber off of metal would be nice.  Wink

I clearanced my swing arm myself. Hopefully it's enough!  Shocked

& I'm going to chain drive. If for no other reason than the belt drive looks so out of place after the transformation.

Yes, A&P, but never earned a living at it.

What is the diameter of your rear wheel?  What is the clearance between wheel and the inside of the swingarm?

Great info here and a great project.  I'm building the Bobster (kind of Sportster and bobber look)  But very intrigued by these one lungers and hope to do a scrambler/Street Tracker version too.

Thanks for the encouraging words, all!
The wheels are 18", & my tires will be here this next week, so I won't know until then on clearance. I wanted 18" DT tires, but my understanding is that their rare as hens teeth! If I find them, I may end up with 2 sets of wheels!  Cheesy

I'm A&P, as well, but never worked on a/c outside of military.
I am a mechanic, though.

I got the crossing brackets welded up, & the bracket supporting the front of the seat loop made. I'm not sure why, but I want this to be removable. Most of the time I see these welded in place.
Hopefully my tires & rearsets are here this week.

Wheels?  Are they from a GS550?  If not what, and what kind of fit problems are you having?  I am doing a similar project and I think I want to have a rear disk break.  another post I was looking at suggested 79-81 GS550 wheels.

I hope your rear disc does not, in fact, break.

The wheels are Kawasaki KZ wheels. 18", & what KZ wheels, & what year is still up for debate!

I'm having issues with getting a front brake rotor, at the moment.

I found a post the other day that mentioned 79-81 GS550 wheels would work.  I want to put a disk on the back.  I have purchased a rear wheel off an 81 model.  We will see how close the fit is.  The wheel is a 17 in wheel.  I was watching Cafe Racer the other night, an old episode and they were rebuilding a Triumph Matise cafe, the reason I mention this is that they left a part off and the rear wheel didn't fit.  The part was a braket to mount the rear caliper.  It was a flange with a cut out for the rear axel and a long arm to lock it into place, this was all one flat piece.  I think I can replicate this using the rear foot peg hole to locate the end of the arm.  you can see my build at:
