Citation CitationYear... number of thousand motorcycle accidents.... thousands of motorcyclist deaths within 30 days...
calculated rate of deaths per thousand accidents
1960 100 0.8 8.0
1965 235 1.7 7.2
1970 305 2.3 7.5
1975 372 3.2 8.6
1980 560 5.1 9.1
1985 480 4.6 9.6
1990 180 3.2 17.8
1995 152 2.2 14.5
2000 130 2.9 22.3
2004 150 4.0 26.7
2005 n/a 4.6 higher?
When where sport motorcycles and full face helmets started being popular? I would have to stop the library to check magazines from the '70's - '80's.
Why has the rate of deaths/accidents tripled with more 'protection'?
first off, I don't understand these numbers, cause they aren't related to how many riders there were in each time period, just how many accidents/deaths, so without that reference this is kinda useless info
and what's the 30 days thing??
just to point out that deaths now are still lower than in 1980 5.1 then vs 4.6 now with a low in 1995 of 2.2 what has happened since 1995 to make those deaths go back up? relaxing of helmet laws maybe? better braking technology, better education for riders?
anyway, the point is, the more you feel protected it is possible that you will take more risky behavior thinking you are protected against any harm, as adults, this should be out of our systems by now. but I can't tell you how many 18 year old brains I've met in 50 year old bodies . . .
personally I wear full face, would love a modular eventually but I've already got too many freaking helmets
