When where sport motorcycles and full face helmets started being popular?  I would have to stop the library to check magazines from the '70's - '80's.
Why has the rate of deaths/accidents tripled with more 'protection'?

It would be interesting to see the sales and scrap data per year broken out for size and style of m/c.

When I had my accident last Oct the helmet saved my face from serious injury.  The face shield was completely destroyed.  Gamble if you want to..........the odds are not in your favor as you tumble down the street like a rag doll.

Ride safe

I slid up the bedside of a pickup & smashed my face into the cab corner. The helmet folded in enough to split my lip. Open face? Woulda been Lots of surgery to get me able to eat again. Or, maybe I woulda died.

In 2005 riding with an open face helmet cost me part of a nose. Putting it back on cost me 56K. Who would have thought a nose cost that much?
In 2007 an open face face helmet cost me a 'face'. My face cost about 125K to put back on, (they had to make the parts).

Today I wear a full face helmet.

The most expensive helmet you can buy wont cover the cost of the ambulance ride, much less the hospital stay. And it might just keep you from going.

Many different brands. You can check your local mc shop or internet. If you check your mc shop, it will allow you to find one that fits your head right.
Prices vary as some brands are higher than others. It all depends on how much your willing to spend, as well as what additions you want on it. Shoeli, Bell, HJC are a few off hand.
Just remember cheapest is not always the best. My first ff I paid $142.00 or. Replaced it after my accident with a ff modular for $192.00.
Go try some different ones on and see what you find to be the best for you. Take care.. Smiley kim

+1 was wearing my HD 3/4 helmet when I was tossed off the bike last Thursday when the sidecar hit the back corner of the stopped to turn car and then spun the rig around and the car on top the bike with the bike on the left side. My glasses scratched my nose and the R lens is scratched. Also the shield that was up at the time is scratched pretty bad. Had a Full Face flip up but wasn't able to trim the liner correctly to not press on my BTE hearing aides and hurt me. Will be trying again to find a flip up. FWIW in Grant Co WA the motor sheriff's have flip ups and I think the WSP motor officers do also, seems I read where a guy was stopped with the chin bar up and no glasses or shield and was cited. He prevailed in court with pictures of the M.O. riding with theirs up and no glasses either. They do have a shield however and that meets the intent of the WA law. I have seen the GCS motor officers run with theirs up also in hot weather, but with glasses and a shield. Had the proper jacket on but no gloves and birdy's nail got bent back pretty bad, also have a deep bruise on my left hip that is still a concern, but x-rays showed no signs of a fracture. Should have had the padded trousers on. Bet I won't straddle either bike again w/o gloves. Max

Do you think one of those $100 bell ff helmets would protect you ok or are those not good enough? I see them at Motorcycle superstore.I was reading some people think modular isn't as safe as standard ,I don't know .

As long as they're DOT approved then they're fine.  If you want to be extra sure you've got a good helmet look for the SNELL approval.  Check out snell info here: http://www.smf.org/stds.html

DOT approval is all you need to be legal, but Snell is much more stringent with their testing, if a helmet has a Snell seal than your gauranteed to have an excellent helmet!  Hope this helps!

I find it interesting how many people are saying that their flip up FF saved their chin/face when mine says right no it that it does not provide chin protection. I guess that's just to cover their butts then?
