Darn Drive Pulley Nut!
01/22/11 at 20:27:56

I've tried everything to try to get this nut off. Unfortunately, my cheap impact wrench doesn't have enough torque to free this nut. I have read all the previous posts and suggestions on getting this nut off and I still can't seem to to find a way to hold the drive pulley tight to utilize a breaker bar effectively. I think I will just remove the left side cover. I was able to remove the drive belt this way without loosening the drive pulley nut during dis-assembly.

My question:

Can the left side cover be removed without removing the kickstand front peg assembly? It looks like it might be possible.

Youve got the washer laid flat & not binding the nut anywhere?

I have been known to rent an impact under circumstances like you describe. A 3/4" impact will wail the crap out of it. Even if all you have is a little pancake compressor, itll pound like the dickens for a few seconds.

You got the belt on the pulley?

I tried it in gear, just kept turning.
I put the front wheel against the wall, just kept turning.
I tried sitting on it and stepping on the brake, just kept turning.
I tried putting a block in front of the wheel, it spit the block out back.
I wrapped a tie down around the wheel and hooked it to the frame... that worked.

No belt on the pulley. I tried the tie down approach. The pulley just kept slipping on me. I'll give that method another shot, knowing that it worked for you. thanks,

If you still have the broken belt, thread it through, ... and clamp it tight 'round the pulley with big visegrips,... then let the visegrips hold against the top of the engine case...
Might wanna' put a rag between the grips and the case...

No belt?... You're left with wedging something between the pulley and the engine case... definitely want a rag for that one...
Huh...

I still had the engine in the frame and belt installed.
I knew I wanted to take the pulley off before I pulled the engine.
But given enough wraps, it should work.
Another thing that should help is Serowbot's idea, as I had this too.
Drop a deep socket into the grooves of the pulley before you wrap it with the tie down.  Select a size that will won't let it go around.
