Back in the dark ages when I started riding it was not uncommon for a dealer to have a parts inventory that would have what you needed. There was only 1 or 2 models of each size bike, and commonly needed parts were stocked....and most bikes shared common things like levers, grips, footpegs, tail lights, etc.....stuff that broke when you fell down! These days there are so many different models, and sometimes even bike brands at each dealership that it is impossible for them to stock everything, and my local dealer seldom has what I need in their inventory.
This is true of almost everything anymore. The issue is: no one wants to hold inventory anymore as is slows cash flow because you have a cash outlay up front and it costs money to store the stuff.
I have a Scion, and drove over a curb and broke a hose in the gas evaporative system. The part had to be ordered from Japan as it was not a common replacement item, and they don't stock it in North America. A common rule of thumb in retail now is only stock what you know you will sell in a month.
