Supercharged Cafe LS650
10/27/23 at 15:20:22

Hi all,
Just opening a topic here for my current Savage (LS650) build.

1. Because I expect challenges down the line and maybe with future issues the combined knowledge on this forum might be able to help.

2. Because I simply want to share to process of the build.

First a short intro. I live in the Netherlands, so excuse my English.
I own quite a few Ducati's and exactly 1 Suzuki  Roll Eyes

That Suzuki is a project that started 10 years ago. The Project has been on and off during that period. It has seen 3 relocations and a divorce but now finally gets the attention it deserves.

It started out with the idea of building the Ryca caferacer. But then I found the topic of Savagebob here on this forum, and a supercharger had to be part of the build. I have an almost complete Ryca kit here in boxes, but almost nothing will be used. So after this build, I will probably have to build another one with the leftover parts  Grin

The goal is to make it kind of a show bike. But it all has to be functional. . Work for short rides, like the Gentlemans Ride for example and around the block and basically be nice enough to be placed here in the living room.

In the last few years I did build a madmax / walking dead style hardtail LS650. (will post a few pics).
A 535 Virago bobber and a Ducati scrambler style bike. All from lower budget, almost unsalvageable bikes. But now it is time to finish the Charged Savage.

I cannot weld aluminium, nor am I an expert in fabrication so I am getting help from a custom builder. And as said, I want this bike to be close to perfect (in my eyes at least). Other than this I am reasonable capable when it comes to working on bikes.

LS650 Hardtail

Virago (it came in cardbox boxes)

Thats my younger sister during Gentlemans Ride:

And the latest project. Ducati M1000ie Scrambler:

And then, the current Project:

More updates will follow soon as I am already further in the process than this last picture.  Smiley

In the pictures above and below, some steps have already been done.

The real wheel has been respoked to a 19".
The swingarm is shaved, holes welded, and it has been adapted to accept the new size wheel.
The frame has been cleaned up a bit.
The front end has been lowered.
The lower fork sliders are shaved and polished.
Clipons have been installed and also a billet top yoke

Next was changing the frame

@TheSneeze, thanks!
Last night I went through your entire tracker build aswell! Looks great!

Because of the stance of the bike, the way I want to route the exhaust and to create space for the supercharger setup, the frame has to be adjusted.

This also meant relocating the top shock mounts and try to make the shock position as symmetrical as possible by moving the left shock inwards as to slim the bike down a bit from the rear:

As can be seen the engine is also back in the frame.  It is a low mileage 5 speed. I should still have the odometer somewhere... but yeah.. you know how that goes  Huh
The engine has been refreshed a few years back.
Honed the cilinder, put in new rings, clearance and everything done. All new gaskets and filters. It has been waiting to be installed back in the bike ever since..
I was temped to put the fresh engine in the mad max LS650 but resisted.. keeping it stashed away for its original purpose  Smiley

The upgraded VerSlavy cam chain adjuster has also been placed.

The engine was painted and polished, but that will have to be done again after this many years.  Undecided

In this pic the lower shock mount has been moved inwards aswell  Grin

Because of moving the left schock inwards something had to be done about the rear belt pulley.

I really wanted to keep the belt and not convert it to a chain drive (even though that would make a lot of things so much easier)

But I like the idea of it being quite unique for a cafe bike. And also, together with the supercharger pulleys on the same side it will all be belts on the left side.

However the standard pulley is way too bulky so we changed that.

Which I think results in a much sleaker look whilst retaining the belt drive  Grin
In the backround the testfit supercharger is also visible already  Cool

Next on the 'To Do' list was the front brake disc.

The rear pulley now has 8 bolts to keep the outer rim in place, so the front disc also needs to have 8 bobbins. Details matter  Wink

Suprise, not many brake discs with 8 bobbins!  Undecided

I found the Honda VTR 1000 F 1997 -2006, with 296mm disc
and the Suzuki TL 1000 1996 - 2001 with 320 mm disc.
Suzuki GSR 600 2006-2009 - 310mm

I went for the GSR !
It's close in size of the rear pulley and just looks a bit more badass  Cool

Some new semi floating bobbins and some machining on the original disc, retaining the center to match the rear pulley design and here we are:

Next step, starting work on mounting the supercharger:

Impressive work , a bit more frame length and a nice shock angle. In Ryca configuration I find seat a bit short needing more to the rear and I’m short.
Top of rear shock should be behind riders butt not pointing at your hip. Very cool I bet lots are watching you.   Cool

Thanks!
The Ryca config is offcourse a lot more simple to apply to the bike without the need to do any serious modifications. But yes I do agree.
In the pictures so far.. the bike is still very slightly leaned over on the rear. But some future very nice shocks will put it a bit  more on its nose.  Cool

Oke... so on with the build..

The position of the charger was good in the post above.. but..

I wanted a bit more volume to the plenum, did some research and that seems to help singles on boost.  And above all, really needed to have a bit more bling to it.

A bit of polishing and there we are.  Cool
A 25psi bleed/pop off valve is on order and will be placed in the plenum aswell when it arrives. To hopefully take care of any backfire detonation and boostspikes.

Now to get some fuel for the bang..
In the topic of Savagebob, after some trial and error he landed on a 40mm CV carb for his setup , and he also posted some of his findings and settings for this setup.

To play it safe, I have gone the same route. It will at least give me a ballpark setting on where to start.. when we finally get to running the bike.

Because bling is the theme for this bike, this is also made out of aluminium.

When everyting is connected it looks like this.   Grin  Grin
Support for the charger will have to be created offcourse, in the most elegant way we can think of..  but that is for later. The final solution for this will also depend on the exact routing of the exhaust in combination with the location of the belts and the tensioners. So that is still to come.
