This summer I picked up a heated vest and gloves from Tourmaster that was on closeout.  I tried it out for the first time last week.  I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked, but the wires are kind of a pain.  Two years ago I road to Orlando in the January and the high was in the low 40s till I made it to Ocala.  Lesson learned.....

Best regards,

Quite right, Thumperclone. Right now it is 47 F at my house, predicted high today is 53 F. I will go for a long ride in a couple of hours, but I would not ride if the temperature dips below the 40s.  Back in the day, I rode in freezing weather out of necessity, but never again.

It gets a little testy when your throttle cable freezes and the carb can't return to idle.

A sunny 50 is my cutoff today ... it's gotta be "fun"

I'm stubborn. I ride year 'round regardless of the temperature.

Honestly though, the cold dictates how far I ride. My body always stays nice and toasty. It's my hands that scream "Go home NOW!!!"

Aaaah

This is half the secret to Cold weather ridding .

The other is called "Freeze Out" under garments

One example :
Last April we (CMAUSA) had our Bike-Blessing in Chattanooga beginning at 8am .   Well , that is a 2 hour ride from my house so ... Leaving at 6am had me ridding in 28 degree but warming temps.   To my surprise , the Freeze-out s  , regular jeans , and chaps was plenty for the bottom .    Freeze out top , reg cotton long shirt , and good jacket w/hood , also open face helmet w/Barclay .

The gloves have the nylon rain covers that come out of the zippered part.  Wink            I'll buy more like these when they finally wear out .   Smiley

Muppets can get away with that.

Thumpercone stated that at 40 degrees and 40 mph the wind chill is 27 degrees ,that's when I ride faster! the wind chill a 40 degrees at 60 mph is 25 degrees ,not much colder and riding 60 to get where your going means you'll be exposed for a shorter time ,(less frostbite ?)

Yep.  That's why I ride the freeway when it's cold or dark.  Limit my exposure.  Smiley

The coldest I have ridden is about 38 F and it wasn't planned. A couple of years ago at the Dragon and we all awoke from a beautiful evening to 38 F weather. Few of us were prepared with cold weather gear, but we weren't letting it stop us. I put on long johns, warm up pants, and then jeans for the bottom. Top was a ss tshirt, ls tshirt, ls fleece pullover, then my warm weather jacket with the rain liner. No neck protection so I found an old toboggan in the truck and cut a hole in the top to make it into a neck gaiter. Had a pair of decent thinsulated leather gloves that did well.

I have since purchased a chin curtain ($8) for my HJC FF helmet to keep that cold air as well as debris out of the helmet. Great addition.

It was still chilly at speeds, but I was riding and happy Cool

I've ridden in the upper 20s.  Throw enough layers on, leather over wool gloves, and double socks....no problem keeping warm. Cool  On the other hand, my face shield frosted (not fogged) on the inside, and the bike does not like the cold.  After sitting outside under the carport, the oil was about the consistency of honey, and warming up, there is an odd spot where the choke is too rich, but no choke is too lean.
