Title: How cold is too cold.....
Post by MShipley on 10/20/17 at 08:23:12

Here in Virginia the afternoons have been glorious, clear and mid 70's. But at night it dips to the low 40's. If I want to have the bike after work I have to ride it too work and so I have. With long johns and a leather jacket, full helmet and gloves it is tolerable but I must admit quit brisk.

So I was wondering how cold is to cold for you?????

Coldest I've ridden in was around 34 degrees. It was in Pennsylvania mid February and I  had a real bad case of cabin fever. I wore thermals, a flannel shirt, heavy sweater and heavy leather and chaps. Probably had about 20 pounds of clothing on. Decided it was a bad idea when I hit a patch of black ice in the shadows, didn't dump the bike but was puckering all the way across the patch.
After that I parked the bike when the temp dropped below 45 degrees.

I have ridden in the mid 30's with insulated riding overpants, leather jacket with 3 layers underneath, and balaclava under my helmet. Unfortunately my gloves were not up to the task. Hands were freezing. For the most part if it goes below forty I will only do 5 to 10 minute rides.

I'm with ED,... 45 is my limit...
...and then I got to be pretty desperate...
More like 50 for realzies... ;D

I will slowly transition to winter wear to the dead of winter which will break 40 in the morning and high 60's in the afternoon.
Any colder and it's usually raining anyway and then I'll wear the 4 wheeled helmet.
insulated jacket, riding pants over jeans, heavy gloves and balaclava.

I have left the house at 18 deg. a few times.  That's thermal underwear, jeans, insulated overpants, two or three pairs of socks, t-shirt over thermals, heavy flannel shirt light jacket, heavy jacket, insulated riding jacket, and heavy insulated gloves.

It was still cool but tolerable.  These days I'm like Ed.  Below 45 is too cold unless it's an absolute have to type of deal. As the quality and reliability of my 4-wheeled vehicles as increased over the years since my teens, my tolerance for cold riding has decreased proportionately.

I have ridden in some very cold weather....and it's never fun. I have taken advantage of the occasional warn day in January/February when you get the odd-ball day in the 40's....provided that thee isn't any salt or sand on the ground.

But after many decades of riding I came to this conclusion several years ago; my low temperature threshold always seems to be my age at the time. Think about it.

LOL, If I didn't go out below my age I wouldn't ride much.  ;D

When I owned the S40, I typically tried to stay about 40ish since bundling up to ride makes it harder to ride.

With the Vision since it has heated grips and a heated seat, I can drop into the mid 30s but I still need my thick jacket and gloved.

My deciding point isn't the temp, it's frost. It there's frost on the cars, I drive.

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by Dave on 10/20/17 at 11:06:22

The coldest long ride that I have ever gone on was for the Moonshine Lunch Run and we left at 6AM - it was 41 degrees.  I was really bundled up, and the ST1100 did a good job keeping the wind off my hands.  It warmed up to the high 60's later in the day and the ride home was much nicer - the entire ride was 570 miles...for a hamburger!

I enjoy rides when the temp is 60 and above.....I endure rides when the temperature is 50 and above.....I choose not to ride when it is colder (unless it is just a very short ride).

There may be some heated gear in my future if I make a habit out of riding in colder weather (the Honda has enough juice to power heated gear).  I am sure my wife would be more willing to go on rides with me if she could stay warm - sometimes our Friday night dates result in chilly rides home.

I've leave for around 6:30 am and it can be pretty chilly.  I base my drive/ride decision on how nice it will be that afternoon.  I have been dealing with low 40s in the mornings this week but have been getting 70s for my ride home.

I take the fastest rout in the mornings when it's cold.  So I have to survive 35 minutes mostly on the freeway on the way in, but enjoy an hour ride home on back roads though park lands.  So far I've only added a light jacket, goggles and unlined leather gloves to keep from freezing in the mornings.

Now that I'm in Florida I miss cooler weather riding, anything below 70 down here and the locals get their hoodies and boots out. ;)

Post by Gary_in_NJ on 10/20/17 at 11:56:12

Another thought...an air temperature of 50F in the sun feels a lot nicer than 50F in the dark.

When I was in college I rode 60 miles to see a friend in 35-40 temps. I wasn't dressed for the conditions and by the time I got there I was cold-soaked. I spent the next two hours wrapped in warm blankets...and then I had to ride back to school. When I got back to school I was just in pain. I think I spent about 3 hours in a warm shower.

Since then I just don't like riding in the cold. Small airplanes suck in the winter too. They rely on heat muffs like the ones used on aircooled VW's.

Mostly the colder months are December,January & February and I still ride but I would have to say 45 and above. It's during July & August it gets past 110 some times and anything above 105 is testing your body with heat and man eating bugs and the occasional swarm of bees. Got me a old Harley shirt that says"If you can't stand the heat stay out of the valley" ;D

This summer I picked up a heated vest and gloves from Tourmaster that was on closeout.  I tried it out for the first time last week.  I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked, but the wires are kind of a pain.  Two years ago I road to Orlando in the January and the high was in the low 40s till I made it to Ocala.  Lesson learned.....

Best regards,

40 F @ 40mph = 26.9 F

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by JLC on 10/21/17 at 08:28:44

Quite right, Thumperclone. Right now it is 47 F at my house, predicted high today is 53 F. I will go for a long ride in a couple of hours, but I would not ride if the temperature dips below the 40s.  Back in the day, I rode in freezing weather out of necessity, but never again.

It gets a little testy when your throttle cable freezes and the carb can't return to idle.

A sunny 50 is my cutoff today ... it's gotta be "fun"

I'm stubborn. I ride year 'round regardless of the temperature.

Honestly though, the cold dictates how far I ride. My body always stays nice and toasty. It's my hands that scream "Go home NOW!!!"

Aaaah

This is half the secret to Cold weather ridding .

The other is called "Freeze Out" under garments

One example :
Last April we (CMAUSA) had our Bike-Blessing in Chattanooga beginning at 8am .   Well , that is a 2 hour ride from my house so ... Leaving at 6am had me ridding in 28 degree but warming temps.   To my surprise , the Freeze-out s  , regular jeans , and chaps was plenty for the bottom .    Freeze out top , reg cotton long shirt , and good jacket w/hood , also open face helmet w/Barclay .

The gloves have the nylon rain covers that come out of the zippered part.  ;)            I'll buy more like these when they finally wear out .   :)

Thumpercone stated that at 40 degrees and 40 mph the wind chill is 27 degrees ,that's when I ride faster! the wind chill a 40 degrees at 60 mph is 25 degrees ,not much colder and riding 60 to get where your going means you'll be exposed for a shorter time ,(less frostbite ?)

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by ohiomoto on 10/23/17 at 05:41:16

Yep.  That's why I ride the freeway when it's cold or dark.  Limit my exposure.  :)

The coldest I have ridden is about 38 F and it wasn't planned. A couple of years ago at the Dragon and we all awoke from a beautiful evening to 38 F weather. Few of us were prepared with cold weather gear, but we weren't letting it stop us. I put on long johns, warm up pants, and then jeans for the bottom. Top was a ss tshirt, ls tshirt, ls fleece pullover, then my warm weather jacket with the rain liner. No neck protection so I found an old toboggan in the truck and cut a hole in the top to make it into a neck gaiter. Had a pair of decent thinsulated leather gloves that did well.

I have since purchased a chin curtain ($8) for my HJC FF helmet to keep that cold air as well as debris out of the helmet. Great addition.

It was still chilly at speeds, but I was riding and happy 8-)

Post by SALB on 10/23/17 at 11:04:32

I've ridden in the upper 20s.  Throw enough layers on, leather over wool gloves, and double socks....no problem keeping warm. 8-)  On the other hand, my face shield frosted (not fogged) on the inside, and the bike does not like the cold.  After sitting outside under the carport, the oil was about the consistency of honey, and warming up, there is an odd spot where the choke is too rich, but no choke is too lean.

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by MShipley on 10/23/17 at 11:17:28

That face shield frosting up is an issue. Mine was just slightly frosty the other morning and when I came around the corner into the early sun it was instant blindness. Fortunately I knew the road very well.

Houston is pretty close to being year round riding. I rode in to work yesterday. Probably mid to lower 50's in the morning. Wore sweater underneath leather jacket. Quite comfortable. It was mid 70's when I left office in the evening so I opened up all the vents in the leather jacket and was comfortable heading home. Except for the last 15 minutes or so, I should have stopped to zip up the vents on the jacket. It got a little chilly.

No it's time to pull the tank , flush & replace in tank filter/strainer and give the carb the once over. This bike has run flawless for thirteen years. She has a cold with a cough & sneeze common to these carbs. Maybe just throw a Mikuni VM40 on it.

We had our first frost this morning....and the high forecast for today is 60 and 67 on Friday - then the high drops to 46,45,54,53 the next 4 days.  I may have to go home at lunch time tomorrow and get the bike out and ride it back to work.

My Savage Cafe' bike will be with me until I just can't ride it anymore. The engine runs great, it handles the curvy local back roads really well, it looks really cool, and it makes me smile when I ride it.

The Honda NT700 will hang around as my long distance tourer, riding double with my wife and hauling on the trailer for vacation day ride bike...it is a bike that has very little resale value, and it is a bike that can easily go over 100,000 miles with little effort - so I might as well just ride it and rack up miles without worry.

The little Ninja 250 Cafe' project is a fun bike and it is light and nimble - but I will likely sell it when I get the Savage "standard" touring bike done...I hope to make something along the lines of the Suzuki Tempter shown below - it is a shame Suzuki never brought this to the US.

Post by LANCER on 10/26/17 at 07:34:22

I think Suzuki would do really well with a Tempter now with the LS650 engine, fuel injection, chrome front/rear fenders, at least a good front disc system if not the rear also, current front/rear suspension upgrades, headlight/signals, etc.  Heck, even throw in a 9.5 or 10:1 piston.
AND ... if you want to perk it up for real fix the exhaust ports !!!
They have everything they need on the parts shelf already, with the exception of the frame but they probably have the dies somewhere and the fixed head, so it should be a very easy build.

SUZUKI ... BUILD IT !!!

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by Ruttly on 10/26/17 at 13:06:07

If they hurry and build it I think it would outsell SR400 & S40.
Cause it will get a big bore and all the other goodies it needs to run as sweet as it looks when it's in my garage.

Title: Re: How cold is too cold.....
Post by Ruttly on 10/26/17 at 13:14:34

No disc brakes , that's what gives the Tempter it's period correct charm !
It's perfect European styling , who ever designed it has a very good eye for building vintage/retro.

Ruttly, sorry   ::)   but I like the Stopping Power of Disk Brakes .

Lancer , so what's wrong with the exhaust ports , my bike runs fine
But a little more power might be good 1  ;)
I'm leaving mine stock after the last experience I had , but to each his own  :)

I rode about 60+ miles today in 65 deg. and it was good ... nylon Jacket , gloves , long-johns , boots and windshield on the bike !  ::)

Dave , that "Standard Bike " reminds me of my new addition ,  :-/ .   Reminds me of the Bikes I learned to ride on " .   8-)

Yep, I seem to be stuck in a bit of a rut.  The new "transformer" looking motorcycles just don't pull my heart strings.  The new bikes ride and handle better than what we rode back in the 70's - but they just aren't pretty and sexy like the old bikes! ;)

Back on topic. :)

42* this morning on the way into work. Wasn't that bad.  I could probably stand mid 30's but then it wouldn't be warm enough for the ride home to make it worth it.

I rode the Guzzi to Murfreesboro today (Dr. appointment) , temperature was in the 60's and very nice .   Just needed a light "wind breaking" jacket / gloves .    Guzzi don't get out a lot (LS is more comfortable) , but it got 55 mpg on fill-up after returning home (100+ miles round trip).   Some of it was 80 mph on the Super Slab into a head-wind.
This Cold/Wet front that is taking over now - should be gone by mid 1st week of Nov.

Dave :  I found out mine is rated at 47 HP ---- The new ones have a Hemi Head (?) and are rated at 52 HP .   Don't expect the same results if ya come across one of them 2017 and up ... But the Older Model is Prettier  ;D .

Yesterday I had a final inspection on a new street at 2 PM.  This is the next to last project of mine that is being completed prior to my semi-retirement - there is a another street that will have the last street section removed on Monday and it will be poured on Tuesday, and a sewage pump station needs to have the electric service connected and all the tests performed........then all the projects I designed and bid this year are done!

The street inspection was not far from home - so I stopped by the house and got the Honda as it was in the 60's and sunny.  It was a nice ride that was over too soon.

This morning it is 36 degrees, rainy with a bit of snowflakes mixed in - my Saturday ride to Lenoxburg for lunch will not happen today (that is the little store where we met the Wildlife Ranger when the group was up here for a ride last summer).  The week forecast doesn't look promising for any enjoyable riding - it looks like the rider will be doing too much shivering!

Dave ,  :)

I'm really glad things are "Shaping-up" for ya !  I enjoyed all those rides we went on in your area .   That stop at the store was great , and that 13 gal. Kawasaki was a good place too.

I've been doing my "retirement" job , (selling calves) , but there nothing exciting about that ...
Well , that not totally true ...

Last Wednesday me and Anders had two sellers in the back alley - one of them decided she would rather run-me-over and leave rather than go on up the back-alley.

So , she put her head down , went to hollering like a crazy cow and charged right at me --- (6 foot wide alley)  ---  :-/

It was kind of exciting  ::)

I stepped into the middle of the ally and reached in to meet her but she was going really fast when she got to me

My plan was to put my fingers into her eyes if she slowed down to "Rub-me-into-the dirt" , but I barely got my hands to her eyes and she turned away .

Well Anders was at the other end of the alley where it got a little wider -You know he has had 5 years of Karate ...

He was ready to put a size 13 up-side here face so she decided I looked like the easier target .

On her way back to me she seen the other cow (800#Bull) going into the stall at the upper end of the alley where I wanted them to go in the first place.

So she blew past me and caught the 800#er.

The trailer was backed up to the other end of the upper stall waiting on the two of them.

She squeezed  past 800#er and got into the trailer before he did , thought she was doing something to get loose , but I was right behind her slamming doors , and then she couldn't get out of the trailer because 800#boy was going in through the door .... then SLAM went the trailer door !   ;D ;) :) ;D ;D ;D 8-) :P

Loading two of them took all of 45 seconds .... but it was intense and a little exciting .    :)

And that's the news from    Lake Wobegon    M&MRanch .

I'd been trying 4 years to get her in a trailer , without having to kill her first !  :)

Yep, there is nothing quite like a crazy cow.  There is just about nothing you can do unless God helps you out in that last second.   ;D ;D ;D
Even Anders size 13 with a strong sidekick would not have phased her, maybe just a quick blink as she ran over him too.
You have to admit, God did intervene on your behalf.
Glad to hear ya'll came out of unscathed and with the cow locked in the trailer.

O' yea , Lancer

1200 lbs. of MAD-COW , is nothing to play with or be taken lightly !   :o

I try to look-out for God's interest and chores here on earth and in turn the good Lord looks out for me , I just hope I can be forgiven for all the Chores I don't see and/or miss .

I didn't get away "Scott Free" on the Mad Cow Loading either ... as I was getting her off me ... my right pinky finger got bent the wrong way ... 6 days now and its still mighty tender !!!  :-[     Sprung it way out of shape ... it was red as a beet for the first 3 days and I still cant get my hand in my jeans without using the other hand to  open the pocket first.  It seems to be healing , so I'm good with letting time do its thing .  :)

Nest exciting chore will be ,  bush hogging  a neighbors hill-side , those are always exciting !    ;)    But they make the tractor payments well !   ;)

Cows are really tough, durable and sturdy.  In the Quaker/Amish/Mennonite area I grew up in, occasionally a cow would get hit by a car.  It was not uncommon for the cow to get up and limp away.......while the car needed to be towed away.

Cows could go through a barb wire fence and leave a small amount of hair on the fence - but no cuts or scrapes.  If a horse gets up against a barb wire fence......they generally need stitches!

A cow is a dumb animal but sometimes that's not true. I get cows grazing in my front yard some times, so I got to run them off. Most just run away but sometimes you get a cow the size of a pick up truck 1100 / 1200 lbs of beef that won't move so I got my cow stick a long broom handle to jab them in the ribs and they get the message to move out, but then you get one that calls your bluff and runs at you for that I use the other end of the stick , I ran a big wood screw in it cut off the head and sharpened it and I jab them with that and most move on but still you get one that keeps on running at you a smarter than average cow and that's when I throw the stick at them and RUN !

Tomorrow , if it ain't raining I'm taking a long "Day-Ride"  .    The forecast is 70+ and 30% .

Then Saturday our CMAUSA group has a ride to Murfreesboro (60 miles) to have Gumbo at a friends house , be after dark getting back.

Then Sunday after Church our CMAUSA (again) is escorting a Toy-Run and Parade .

If the rain holds off .     (How Cold is TOO COLD ?)
"Long as it don't rain the Cold is OK ! " , in November that is !  ;)

Did get to ride today !

Met wife in the next town over for dinner , and it was still warm enough that only a nylon wind breaker w/gloves was enough , open face 1/2 helmet w/no Barclay .    :) :)

this is a surprise find ,  Triumph might have some competition  ???

Great video of a bike to promote it.....Looks like a couple teenagers playing GTA!!!
Blowing thru and around traffic doing less than half their speed!
I saw the speedo over 150, (Had to be KPH not MPH!)
If that is how they think they should promote a new bike, no wonder so few bikes are being sold, YOUNG RIDERS MUST BE DEAD OR IN JAIL!!

I hope your shorts haven't become so loose that there is a danger that they will droop and/or drop! :-?

Any temperature within reason is "OK" as long as you are dressed appropriately. The problems arise when you are caught out without proper gear and there's a weather change, or you just misread the conditions. Which I did today. I decide today is the day to put the S40 in storage. I get up, it's sunny and mid-40s (Fahrenheit) and I only have 8 miles to ride to the storage place, so my leather jacket and heavier but unlined gloves will be fine. Well, 5 of those 8 miles are on a 70 mph limit highway. At 70 mph, 43 degrees F feels like about 5 below zero F. My hands are numb long before I get there. My wife, who comes to pick me up, is still laughing at me, and here I thought after 32 years she kinda liked me...
