Crap !!  Bike won't start this morning ......
09/21/17 at 05:32:14

Put the key in and pressed the button and ..... nothing  Embarrassed

Lights came on when I turned the key on.
When I pushed the start button the lights went dim and there was no click - no start.
Release the start button and the lights came back up.

I can't look at it until after lunch but any advice would be appreciated.

It could be a low battery, the clutch safety switch........or........ I can't remember if the "kill" switch disables the starter button?

Sounds like a battery.   I'd start there.

I think yes.  IIRC, I often go to start mine and forget that I used the kill switch to shut it off, and wonder why I get no response.  Then I flip the kill switch and crisis averted.

What, when I push the start button, could be engaging that pulls the lights down but doesn't go "click"??

It's possible that if the battery has given up.....pushing the start button may take away what little juice the battery has - and there isn't enough power to activate a "click".

I believe that in 2004 the wiring was changed, so that the headlight is disconnected when the starter button is pushed.

It was changed in 2005
A quick check of the wiring diagrams would tell but...

Yep...2004 was the last year without the 4 flashers and push to pass switch for the headlight - the 2005 model got that stuff, along with the headlight that shuts off when you hit the starter button.....and I believe the shape of the turn signals changed as well.

If the kill switch didn't stop the bike from starting wouldn't we need to flip it up then down again each time we wanted to use it?

I suffered the same thing ,earlier this this year, found a loose positive cable at the battery .Vibration loosened the bolt there was enough contact to have lights but not enough to carry all the amps for the starter motor ,and when I hit the starter button the lights died.

Success !!

After taking every last thing apart on the bike I found that the clutch switch is sticking intermittently, not returning to the full out position when the clutch is pulled in.
I have it bypassed right now and will order a new switch..

I took the seat and tank off while troubleshooting and checked all the connectors. That's a good thing.

The bike's back together and I'm off for a spin to Point Pelee National Park just about 5 miles from my home. A great peaceful cruise  Wink

Thanks for your help and moral support !!!

Did you try just shooting some WD40 in the switch?  Had that happen to the brake switch on my Ninja and that's all it took. Seems that road debris just gets blown up in those switches and needs to b cleaned out.  Has worked perfectly for over a year now.

Yes, I shot some WD-40 into it and clicked it a few times - still seems a little flaky.

We'll see - thanks Stew
