Glad to hear you are still not drinking. I got picked up on a DUI back in '87. Blew a .18 BAC, went through the state rehab program which was just a pigeon hole and say yes I was bad deal. I did realize that excessive drinking can be a problem for anybody. Some of the people in the program were repeat offenders and had put either themselves or others in the hospital from car wrecks. Just for $hits and giggles I quit drinking for six months and realized one of the main reasons I was drinking was bordum. Don't knows if this helps but hang in there.

I have a disease, I think that's what they call it.
I used to drink a lot, Yes I'm an alcoholic.

I do not go to meetings, but I know the Serenity Prayer
I found a friend in booze, a friend that was always there.

I didn't drink to hide, nor rid myself of pain,
I drank to get drunk then drank some more and then drank to maintain.

I drank until it hurt, but it didn't bother me,
I hurt the ones I loved, but I didn't seem to see.

I'd drink just about anything, well anything with booze,
I never knew my limit, when drunk I could'nt loose.

I drank myself angry and then I drank some more,
I drank till it was gone, or I passed out on the floor.

I spent years drinking, drinking myself to sleep,
I drank myself into a hole, that was getting terrably deep.

I woke up one day so tired, from all the days before,
and at that moment I vowed, that I would drink no more.

The first day sucked it hurt so bad I cryed out for a drink.
the second day was hardly better, but then I started to think.

I know I have a problem, alcohol is killing me,
And so I’m seeking shelter, like a sailing ship asea.

Alcohol is a deadly killer, with no discrimination,
a serial killer it's patient, then kills without hesitation.

The days are getting better, the withdrawls are easing down,
The booze is everywhere my God, it’s always around.

Relapse is very common, Saying No is the hardest thing,
They say just take it one day at a time, a mantra that I sing.

It's hard my friend it's hard, but we will do our best
No alchohol is in my home, the always unwelcome guest.

Its nice not being alone, I know there's others like me,
Who chose to fight the hardest fight, and find sobriety.

Hi Mick.......I'm 72 and just an 'old geezer' wishing you well.  Take care of yourself.  I have breakfast every morning with 6 other 'old geezers' and I told them about you.  The one who owns an airplane said we needed to come see you and take you to lunch.

Thanks baldeagle,I'm still hanging in there, gets easier all the time. Booze is no problem but I really miss cigarettes.Everytime I see a movie and people are smoking in it, it drives me nuts,I use a piece of 1/4 " dowel not much flaver but it takes the craving away,I think it's the habit itself more that the need for nicotine,I hope I don't get adicted to pine sap.

First time I'd seen this thread. I'd be quite cranky going crash on my vices all at once. We're both too old to be banging heads in the mosh pit, can we try a restart?
About 11 years ago I had a young doctor that told me he'd worked at a substance abuse clinic in Boston. He said he had patients who told him it was easier to quit heroin then cigarettes. I smoked then and he told me about an antidepressant called Welbutrin ,it was crappy as an antidepressant but they found patients taking it were stopping smoking. He asked me if I felt like giving it a try which I did. No instructions on when to stop or anything and after about 2 weeks I just quit smoking then stopped the Welbutrin about 2 weeks later. Now even being around people smoking I have no desire. Call your doctor and get an opinion because you won't even think about lighting up anymore if it works for you like it did for me.
Also you mentioned Arrowhead to Long Beach. Did you ever drop in to Moto Guzzi Classics in Long Beach. The owner Mark Ethridge is a good friend.

No I never did go to MotoGuzzi place, I did live in long beach for a while and San Diego, in SD they had a Ducati dealership I used to hang out there and drool.
That wellbuten stuff,my kids all used it to quit smoking ,when they saw me in hospital with pipes and tubes coming from every orofice and some holes in my neck that they made ,I made the kids promise me they would quit, and they did,I think my son sneaks one once in a while,he is one of those guys that can smoke a cigarette and not have another one for 3 or 4 days. None of that half measure for me,2 packs a day,3 if I was drinking. quit cold turkey.
what about you babyhog ? you said you were going to quit as well, perhaps this new years ?
In fact why don't we have a group of smoking quitters all quit on new years day,it's not just your health anymore ,but I'm saving $300 a month ,I have no idea how I could afford it,I guess we adjust to fit eh!

...yea the Sandy eggo place is GP Cycles. The owner is quite the icon. Actually a Guzzi guru, however I haven't spent much time with him other then standing in line for food at the San Diego Guzzi Rally a few years back. Nice "old school shop".

Mick, sadly I have yet to quit.  And I tried the Wellbutrin.  Asked my dentist to prescribe it for me.  But I just kept going.  New Years?  Sounds like a great resolution....  I'll put it on my calendar.

That is when I know I have kicked the habit as I am able topush the thought away as fast as it came and refrain from giving in to the temptation.
O and hubby has been quit for a month now. I am very proud of him as it was starting to show in his health.
