You quit smoking so you got the stuff to stay off the booze too.
Your positive mental attitude will see you thru. Sounds like you have lots of projects to keep things interesting.

AA's not a bad deal mick, it gives you the support you WILL need.
Quiting booze aint as easy as quiting smokeing.

Watched my brother drink himself to death after he came home from Vietnam. 38 years old with 4 kids.
Watched several uncles on moms side and a couple of friends with the same problem.
Some doctors say its genetic.

You'll have good days and bad days. Those bad days is when you'll need an ear to bend and a shoulder to lean on. AA or a really good friend is what helps then. Thing about AA is it gives you someone who knows what your going through, someone whos been there. Dealt with the demons.
Most folks dont know or relize just how bad it can get.

Today may not seem bad, depending on how much you drank a day. Each day is going to get a lil worse for the next couple of weeks.
Massive depression, Withdrawl symptoms, DT's, suicidal thoughts, major mood swings, feeling like death warmed over, these are all headed your way. Find some help.
It does get easier...eventualy. But its going to take awhile and you'll never be over it. The temptation, the need, will always be there.

Major trick is keep your MIND occupied. Build, read, something to keep your mind elsewhere. And then it will still sneak up on you and bite you in the arse. You really want to quit and stay quit, find a sponsor. And dont drink ANYTHING alcoholic! One drink and your back to square one, even a beer.
Good Luck.

Naw, i got a wakeup call early on watching my brother and uncles drink themselves to death. So i kept a pretty close eye on myself and how much i drank. And what i drank. I stayed with stuff i just kinda liked and stayed away from the wild turkey and vodka, the stuff i liked.
Even then after my divorce i got to drinking like a d@mn fish, wild turkey. Got another wakeup call with a BAC in my own d@mn driveway. Thankfully before it became a way of life, just habit after work.
Made me take a hard look at what road i was on.
Now days its a beer sometimes two during the summer when bar-b-qing. No more and usualy less. Might drink 2 sixpacks all summer, no vodka or whiskey except for one mixed drink on new years eve.
I miss it still but its a road id rather not travel. Destroys families and lives. Ive seen that first hand, not a pretty sight.

My brother used to get up and drink a LARGE water glass(maybe 2 CUPS) of segrams 7 with about 1 inch of coke on top...for breakfast.
Then had a glass in his hand the rest of the day.
The boy could drink a fifth and youd never even know it. A case of beer would'nt even touch him. It was nothing to see him drink 2 fifths a day and would only stop because it was bed time. Youd never know he was drunk, maybe buzzed untill most of the second fifth was gone. Then ive seen worse drunks off of 2 sixpacks.
Got an uncle still drinks at least a case a day of tallboys. Third marriage and a newborn. At least this one seems to of dried him up a bit. Second one drnak as much as he did.
Not much about alcohol i have'nt seen.

You really want to quit mick then hit AA and find a sponsor, not a family member. Someone who's been there.
But then at your age(72 was'nt it?) it might be easier to just limit yourself to one or two mixed drinks before bedtime.
I mean he!!, the average american male only lives to 78 now...lol

Mick in the one year I've known you you have lost motorcycles, tobacco, your left hand, your Dad. Thats too much for anyone to handle in that short a time period. It makes perfectly good sense that alchohol has become your best friend. You cant control your drinking because you are in full flight from reality. For years alchohol was my best friend and one day it turned on me just like it has with you. You are gonna have to find another best friend just like I did. If you really can quit without help thats great, but if you dont replace the alchohol with something positive in your life you are going to become one bitter, angry SOB that no one wants to be around. What you experienced yesterday is referred to as a moment of clarity, every alchoholic has them at some point in their drinking career. Its a warning sign. You handled it well, at that point in time you were completely honest with yourself. Admitting to the world you are an alchoholic took complete honesty and a 5 gallon bucket of balls. You completed the first and most important step to recovery. Now you need to replace your old friend Jack Barleycorn with a more positive productive friend which will turn you into a fully functioning recovering alchoholic people will enjoy being around. Mick you are a highly intelligent individual, you have proved that. Most alchoholics are above average intelligence. You have some important decisions to make regarding your life, the key to your happiness lies in you becoming perfectly honest with yourself. Thats extremely hard for an alchoholic to do. We have lived in our own little dreamland for many many years and it becomes hard to distinguish reality. Its safe in our little dreamland until one day we discover that Jack Barleycorn has destroyed our body, our mind and our life. You've had your moment of clarity now you have important decisions to make. For the next several months your life is gonna be one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride. Be completely honest with yourself and you will make the right decision. Always remember this, if you need help, help is always available. I know that for a fact because my name is Mike S. and I'm an alchoholic.

The time it takes to lose the desire to drink is different for everyone. For me, October will be 25 years sans alcohol. I partied a lot when I was younger, and lost friends from booze related auto accidents. The clincher for me was waking up one morning and not remembering driving home. The car was outside, so I obviously did indeed get myself home but had no memory of it. It did scare the shite out of me.

When my Dad passed away last year I went to Florida for the services and stayed with my younger brother the first couple of nights, then my older brother in Daytona. They still party like it's the 70's. They actually had coolers filled with beer outside of the funeral home. They were pi$$ed from morning until night time. I got sick observing their behavior which included near fights in the bar/restaurant next door to the funeral home. I was never so happy to get back to New Jersey.

Bottom line is that after a while, you will be a much better person, and, you'll feel it. I know I do. Yeah, the first couple of years were rough, but I lost the desire soon after. Good luck, and yes I agree, AA is a great program with good people. It will help in more ways then one.

I'm drinking water with a dash of Rose's lime juice, you know us limeys must have our lime juice to prevent scurvy. I have had very little sleep. I think I will hit the shower and go to bed and try again, goodnight chaps.

Here's hoping you made it through. If not, pick it up and start again. A couple of suggestions for sleeping. If you can't fall asleep, get up out of bed and do something productive. By "can't" anything more than 1/2 hour of trying to fall asleep is where I set my limit. The mind is an amazing thing, and it can think a million miles an hour even when it's tired. But it can be trained to sleep when you go to bed. Just remember the three S's for being in bed, Sleep, Sex or Sick. Don't read, toss and turn, or mull over the day's or your life's event's. You may get really tired during the ay for a while but this will only last a couple of days - no naps.

All the best to you Mick, its a hard ride.  I hung with a crowd when I was younger who were heavy into alcohol and drugs.  Fortunately I became a born-again socialist.

Keep up the good fight -- sleep will (eventually) come.

If you do start to get into some serious sleep deprivation (believe me, you'll know) see your doc.  You may need some minor tranquilizers to break the cycle and get back into an REM cycle.

BTW, according to Steve Winwood, Mr.  Barleycorn goes by the name of John:

BTW:  Songs about drinking are much better than the actual drinking.
