Decomp Solenoid Adjustment

Going out to get manual now Smiley

Back...Here it is according to the SSM.  I will summarize since I'm a slow typist Smiley

Remove seat and tank

Remove plug and timing inspection plug

Put engine at TDC on compression stroke

Pull the actuator body on the solenoid (lousy photo) and measure the end length on the shaft.

Loosen lock nuts on lever, adjust cable at the lever to make measurement at solenoid 3-5 MM.

...You did misread it a little bit, but with the terrible photo in the manual it isn't very clear.  I also know that once you do it this way, you'll find an easier way to do it next time...as I mentioned above.

BTW - the first thing the SSM says in this section is:

"Incorrect adjustment of the cable free play may result in starting difficulties or engine damage."

Been out working on the old beast, and thought that I'd check the decompression cable.  Mine is way out of adjustment, too.

I also realize that the SSM isn't very clear about this issue and the pictures are pretty poor.  So it is photo time again.

I hope this helps...

Decompression solenoid aka big round thingy that goes click when the starter button is pressed.

That big black rubber cover hids the plunger.

Go ahead pull it off.

Pull the actuator body on the solenoid (lousy photo) and measure the end length on the shaft.

Loosen lock nuts on lever, adjust cable at the lever to make measurement at solenoid 3-5 MM.

To add to the previous section...

This is the gap under the decompression lever cam and the exhaust valve rocker arm when I set the solenoid shaft to 4 MM.

The engine is at TDC on the compression stroke by using the valve timing mark and watching the exhaust valves.

What happens when you push the starter button...
1st click is the decomp (a little less the a half second) the decomp kicks open the exhaust valves.
2nd click is starter relay, the starter should be spinning like a top now.

When trouble shooting, lean to the left and eye ball the decomp lever.
what's important is the decomp goes click and that lever moves, means it's getting enough juice.

also a tight decomp will make it hard to start too.
a loose one will make the starter stall, which means it isn't re-leaving the compression stroke.
keep it adjusted in between.

Does the decomp solenoid come out of spec? Is there a recommended milage increment to check for adjustment?

same as valves.

download the owners manual and then you'll know.

Verslagen - That whole thread/link you shared is full of click bait garbage.  It would be nice if a known legit service manual was available online or saved somewhere in the technical section on this site.

Hey thumper,

The last post in that thread has a readable owners manual. It's not the clymer book mind you, this is the owners manual that comes with the bike when purchased new o think.

OK, deleted all of the posts with links as people can't be bothered to read the next thread which said don't do that.

There are a few posts with links that aren't followed with warnings.
As I'm no longer willing to throw my computer on the alter for sacrifice at every link, you're on your own. Please report any difficulties.  Thank you, come again.
