REMEMBER: that for that kind of round trip ... you'll need to fill up the tank EVERY DAY ... (it's a small tank)

Ricahrd in Bsoton, MA, USA

Yah, sucks to fill up so often.  I get two trips luckily.  I have a 5 gallon can just for the savage that I fill up whenever my car need gas.

I agree that the mileage is nice but I would have a hard time naming that as a reason for someone to get a bike.  Sure, once you have one the bike is going to be cheaper to ride than the car.  For most people I think it is probably false economy.  If you ride a lot, like almost 10k a year(cummute only) then you might see some noticable money savings from it.  But then there is the tendency to spend a few bucks on the bike here and there.  Any gear you may need starting out, joyrides, ect.  You really have a bike because you enjoy riding one and you really won't know that for sure until you get one.  Especially for cummuting, it's not for everyone.  If you could ditch the car completely then that would save some money, but that's not an option for me.  Gas only, I figure I save roughly $7 per 100 miles compared to my truck.  I have ridden 6000 mile this last year since I got my bike which mean I've saved $420 in gas.  That only covers my MSF and taxes.  Another couple years will cover my gear, exhaust upgrade($110) and tires and I could consider myself pretty much finacially even unless I break a leg or something.  But by that time I will probably need new tires again, will probably have spent another $200 misc and my be in the market for another bike.

The Savage is my primary transportation.  It does not suplement a cage, it replaces it.  Insurance is far cheaper, maintenance is far cheaper, tires are a push.

ditto, my scooter is my primary transportation however the benefits where not the reason i chose it. I love to ride, but it just so happens that my insurance is $1000 less per year, and i spend $20 a month on gas versus $20-40 a week. but i could care less about the spending i'd spend the extra $1000 a year on insurance and $20-$40 a week on gas if i had too just to ride. I see it as a added benifet but not the reason i chose to ride and for it to be my primary vehicle.

I've owned and/or ridden since about 1978.  Been a few years without a motorcycle.  I don't need justification for one, but the wife does.....    Grin

Lets see, I've owned and/or ridden

1977 Yamaha XS 750 Special
1982 Kawasaki 750 LTD
1984 Kawasaki GPz 750 Turbo
1986 Suzuki GS 450 L
1995 Yamaha XV 535 Virago

Had to part with all my toys when we bought a house.  Still in the reaquiring stage.....   Grin

Soon to own

Suzuki Boulevard S40

The S40 is the only thing new out there that "trips my trigger".  The fuel mileage will just be a bonus!

Wish I would have kept the 450L, had a 6 speed transmission.  Great on gas!  Great commuter.

From what I've read wish Suzuki would put a 6 Speed transmission on the S40.

I may change jobs and will only commute about 40 miles a week instead of 480 miles a week.  Either way still getting an S40.   8)

Ah, the '77 Yamaha XS 750....I had an '80 XS 850.  That "trips my trigger" too Smiley

Anyway, since you are in the thinking stage you may want to consider that the Savage mileage is really good, but I think the biggest complaint is the size of the tank.  The tank is all about style and you'll always have to be within 120-130 miles of your next gas station....a situation that I got into not long ago on a trip to a remote spot near Mt. St. Helens.  My nearest gas stop was 60 miles from the mountian.  Reserve is good for around 25 miles.

I would have carried along a 2 gallons plastic gas can. That would give me another 100+ miles on top our beloved/hated styling tank.  Grin

Well lets see, I pass 13 gas stations on my commute.  Don't think refueling will be a problem in my area.  Grin  Understand why it can be in your area.

The style is a big part of what I like about the S40.

In Indianna I doubt that you can get 20 miles from a service station.  Out here in the west it is not uncommon to be leaving a town and seeing a sign that says "no services next xxx miles" with that xxx being anything from 50 to over 100.

When I lived in the southeast, it was the same.

So, I guess you'll be joining us soon with a new Savage40.
