Title: Fuel Mileage?
Post by LMM on 07/20/05 at 13:11:37

Looking at buying a new Suzuki Boulevard S40.  Will be riding on a daily commute (80 miles round trip).  Interested in what kind of fuel mileage you guys/gals are getting with your LS650/Savage/S40?

This will be a "fun" ride motorcycle also not just for commuting.   8)

Fuel savings for the commute is the big selling point to the wife.  Any info appreciated.

It's a great bike.  Mileage differs since mods, riding conditions and riding habits differ.  I personally average about 57 MPG.

I get right at 50mpg. Highway commute. There have been quite a few thread on this forum and others about the cost of motorcycle commuting. It is working for me. I got a good deal on my '04, I was driving a full size pickup. Gas prices just keep going up. I figured the cost per mile of the truck vs the Savage without taking the cost of purchase price into account and then offset cost of the bike with the savings (~$.20/mile for my circumstances). One thing to also consider is whether you will be doing your own wrenching.

If you are comparing a buying new bike (even a savage) vs. a used econobox, the savings won't be there to justify the motorcycle.

Before I relaced the baffling in myaftermarket pipe, my old 98 Savage was pulling in the 70s mpg consistently. Currently pulls around 52 city, 70 highway the way my stepson rides it. The 800 Intruder is pulling around 46 mpg. Pathetic. I can get that mpg out of the Celica and be somewhat comfortable (if I'd get off my dead butt and fix the car that is). My truck gets 8-12 mpg.

I'm thinking about buying a late associate's 1909 Harley Silent Grey Fellow. 425cc single cylinder flathead with belt drive. 35 mph top speed, BUT, gets 160-180 mpg.

8)My bone-stock '03 Savage, with almost 4000km (2500mi) on the clock,  has since new been averaging between 50 & 60 mpg (based on U.S. gallon) ... lately though I seem to have improved on that a bit?!
There's a great Thread somewhere on this Forum devoted to the LS' fuel milage ... but as previously stated it seems to vary widely due to variables such as state of tune, riding habits and modifications to stock set-up ...

My wife and I went on a ride from Niagara Falls to Rochester (NY) and got 66mpg. '99 ls 650 stock.

i average a whopping 43-45 mpg.

but then again i ride go kart style.  ;D

three throttle positions.

closed, full open,  steady after reaching speed. repeat.

it blows the milage to pieces, but it's a darn fun way to ride.

Assuming that the commute is mostly a steady state 55-65 you can expect at least 55 mpg.

Depending on how much "fun" you have you can approach 40 mpg.

My Savage replaces my wife's (she's owned it longer than she's owned me) 1972 Camaro RS 350 LT1.  The way I drive and as bad as it is running I am saving over $.25 per mile.

Assuming 60 mpg Savage replacing a 20 mpg car on a 80 mile round trip commute regular gas at $2.60 /gallon you are looking at  $45 week in gasoline savings --  $195/month,  $2250/year.

Toss in the depreciation of 20,000 miles/year on the cage vs. the bike. and you're looking to save another $2K a year.

With the Savage you can do most of the maintenance yourself for more savings over a cage.

You also can arrive home relaxed and ready to tackle a couple of jobs around the house versus arriving home after frustrated from fighting traffic in the cage and needing a double scotch.

'05 S40 all stock up til 3 days ago (idle screw adjustment) Have been getting a very reliable 59mpg.  That is very little stop and go, steady 35-40 & 55-60mph.

And oh yes she is a fun bike to ride!  Even likes the off rode!!  My hubby swears we should turn her loose in the yard once in a while to keep her calm & steady on the street!  ;D

55-57 mpg sounds about right.  I'm still breaking her in.  @ 375 miles on her and I do like to get into her a little bit  ::)
Happy with the mpg without any highway miles.

Thanks for the info!!  I'll be able to cut my weekly fuel expense in half.  That is good enough to convince the wife.   ;D

My wife bought me mine for Christmas and no mention of additional life insurance.  :o

My wife suggested the motorcycle in lieu of a car.  I think she's trying to kill me so she can go after a young stud.

REMEMBER: that for that kind of round trip ... you'll need to fill up the tank EVERY DAY ... (it's a small tank)

Ricahrd in Bsoton, MA, USA

Yah, sucks to fill up so often.  I get two trips luckily.  I have a 5 gallon can just for the savage that I fill up whenever my car need gas.

I agree that the mileage is nice but I would have a hard time naming that as a reason for someone to get a bike.  Sure, once you have one the bike is going to be cheaper to ride than the car.  For most people I think it is probably false economy.  If you ride a lot, like almost 10k a year(cummute only) then you might see some noticable money savings from it.  But then there is the tendency to spend a few bucks on the bike here and there.  Any gear you may need starting out, joyrides, ect.  You really have a bike because you enjoy riding one and you really won't know that for sure until you get one.  Especially for cummuting, it's not for everyone.  If you could ditch the car completely then that would save some money, but that's not an option for me.  Gas only, I figure I save roughly $7 per 100 miles compared to my truck.  I have ridden 6000 mile this last year since I got my bike which mean I've saved $420 in gas.  That only covers my MSF and taxes.  Another couple years will cover my gear, exhaust upgrade($110) and tires and I could consider myself pretty much finacially even unless I break a leg or something.  But by that time I will probably need new tires again, will probably have spent another $200 misc and my be in the market for another bike.

The Savage is my primary transportation.  It does not suplement a cage, it replaces it.  Insurance is far cheaper, maintenance is far cheaper, tires are a push.

Post by mikedasavage on 07/21/05 at 15:53:44

ditto, my scooter is my primary transportation however the benefits where not the reason i chose it. I love to ride, but it just so happens that my insurance is $1000 less per year, and i spend $20 a month on gas versus $20-40 a week. but i could care less about the spending i'd spend the extra $1000 a year on insurance and $20-$40 a week on gas if i had too just to ride. I see it as a added benifet but not the reason i chose to ride and for it to be my primary vehicle.

I've owned and/or ridden since about 1978.  Been a few years without a motorcycle.  I don't need justification for one, but the wife does.....    ;D

Lets see, I've owned and/or ridden

1977 Yamaha XS 750 Special
1982 Kawasaki 750 LTD
1984 Kawasaki GPz 750 Turbo
1986 Suzuki GS 450 L
1995 Yamaha XV 535 Virago

Had to part with all my toys when we bought a house.  Still in the reaquiring stage.....   ;D

Soon to own

Suzuki Boulevard S40

The S40 is the only thing new out there that "trips my trigger".  The fuel mileage will just be a bonus!

Wish I would have kept the 450L, had a 6 speed transmission.  Great on gas!  Great commuter.

From what I've read wish Suzuki would put a 6 Speed transmission on the S40.

I may change jobs and will only commute about 40 miles a week instead of 480 miles a week.  Either way still getting an S40.   8)

Ah, the '77 Yamaha XS 750....I had an '80 XS 850.  That "trips my trigger" too :)

Anyway, since you are in the thinking stage you may want to consider that the Savage mileage is really good, but I think the biggest complaint is the size of the tank.  The tank is all about style and you'll always have to be within 120-130 miles of your next gas station....a situation that I got into not long ago on a trip to a remote spot near Mt. St. Helens.  My nearest gas stop was 60 miles from the mountian.  Reserve is good for around 25 miles.

I would have carried along a 2 gallons plastic gas can. That would give me another 100+ miles on top our beloved/hated styling tank.  ;D

Well lets see, I pass 13 gas stations on my commute.  Don't think refueling will be a problem in my area.  ;D  Understand why it can be in your area.

The style is a big part of what I like about the S40.

In Indianna I doubt that you can get 20 miles from a service station.  Out here in the west it is not uncommon to be leaving a town and seeing a sign that says "no services next xxx miles" with that xxx being anything from 50 to over 100.

When I lived in the southeast, it was the same.

So, I guess you'll be joining us soon with a new Savage40.
