Replacing Jardine muffler with OEM
09/28/21 at 16:28:46

Hi,

Generally speaking, does switching to a different muffler necessitate removing and re-jetting the carb?

Asking because the Savage I just bought came with a Jardine exhaust on it.  It’s a bit too loud for my quiet neighborhood.   I’d like to trade for a factory muffler.  I guess I’m going against the norm, higher performance to lower.

I think what I’m asking is, is it possible to swap the muffler and not have to mess with the carburetor?

Thanks

If it's not tuned properly, louder doesn't mean higher performance.

I can't say for sure because you haven't told me anything about the bike, but most likely yes, you will need to rejet.

You can get a Dyna muffler for cheap, they have a nice sound, easy to jet. Sometimes kinda challenging to mount.

I don’t know how the Jardine muffler mounts, but if it’s like the aftermarket slip-on I have the end piece of the exhaust pipe is removed, removing the possibility of using an OEM muffler again.

The PO mounted a Dyna can on mine and it sounds great. I think I have a vid posted here somewhere of it.

Thanks for all the advice.  Sorry I don’t have more info on my bike.  Bought it used.  Already had a few owners so no telling its history.   I’m going through all that detective work now.  The bike appears to have been fairly well cared for.

It’s probably been re-jetted for the Jardine pipe that the previous owner mounted.  I guess I could try quieting it by packing with fiberglass.  Anyone here have advice on that?  I wonder if carb tuning would follow that.  A user named rolavine did this but I don’t think he posts here anymore.

Another option is the stainless automotive muffler that DragBikeMike is running on his. It is loud in factory form but he has a writeup on how to calm it down to acceptable sound levels pretty easily.

Richass Harley riders buy a bike and have the exhaust upgraded. The take off Dyna mufflers are often just twenty bucks. The mounting style matters. Suzuki uses a rail.

OP here.  Just contacted Jardine and the said there are no options to quiet this pipe.  I was hoping there was an insert like a silencer or “db killer”.  I suppose I could try and pull the baffle out and rewrap it but it’s got rivets.  At this point it may be best to trade it to someone who wants a louder upgrade.   It does sound great!  But at my age I appreciate the quiet.   Maybe I’ll go to the “Marketplace” here and see if anyone wants to trade.

Thanks all!

Thanks Gary. Are you talking about this part?

JED, this post gives a blow-by-blow on packing a Mac muffler with ceramic packing material.  It looks very similar to your Jardine.  I'm sure you can use the same technique.
