Ignition Coil Replacement
08/26/21 at 18:31:18
Is this pretty straight forward? Remove the two screws and disconnect the two wires on the side. Then reverse the order when installing the replacement? I only ask because it just seems to be my luck that its never as easy as I think its going to be.

Hey zipidachimp! Funny you should ask and I hope my mistake does educate. So I've changed automotive spark plugs many times over the years. Never done a motorcycle before. Never owned one till now. Recently picked up a '03. Don't know much on the maintenance history so trying to do preventative items. Pulled the old plug and it was pretty dirty. I'm thinking its running a little rich? Backfires quite a bit. Anyways, put the new plug in and the boot won't go on. I look at the old one and see that the terminal "cover" is missing. Just a little threaded nub on the old one. I assume it pulled off somehow and is stuck in the boot. Lighting was bad and hard for me to see into the boot but I reason that has to be the problem. Fiddled with it for a while and and ended up taking the guts out of the boot. That is when I realized that I was searching for a piece that was never in there to begin with
I kinda messed the boot up and honestly not sure what order the parts go back into the boot. There is a spring and a small rod that goes in first but I have no idea which goes first. So I got a used OEM one off eBay to replace it. It would be my luck I put the pieces in wrong and it causes some sort of electrical damage.

Well,, it's too bad you already replaced the plug.
The plug sits down in a cavity. Dirt gathers in there. I did it. But realized the mistake, took toilet ring wax on a stick and probed the cylinder and fished out junk.
In the future blow that cavity out before you move the plug.

Put the coil in the other night. It really was that easy! Turned over twice and fired right up!
