Use Safety Guards...

If your radial arm saw has a broken or missing blade guard, fix or replace it. Ask me how I know...

Happened Sunday. So far I can move everything ok and have most feeling except where trauma is. Will see a hand specialist next week to see if any surgery is needed.

Oh my Stew. Thank God it seems you are OK. I hope the specialist confirms that all is functioning correctly.

Dude, God stopped that blade as it entered your hand, if not you would have no hand at all.
You could have easily died from massive blood loss.
It was HIS mercy that saved you.
No arteries cut.
No nerves cut that you know of.
You seem to have maintained full function.

The Creator of all things stepped in for you.

I thank God for your life.

Thanks Lancer. Well said. No doubt a guardian angel was looking over me. It was a very nasty cut (exposed bones and tendons, etc.) but somehow the ER doc said I missed a lot of serious stuff by mm's.

It bled good, but I immediately taped a clean towel over it while I gathered my composure, and even calm enough to rinse off in the shower while wifey was getting dressed to leave for the ER.

Considering the circumstances I remained calm, and in triage my pulse was 55 bpm and normal blood pressure.

Petty amazing in my book. Wink

...and I'm gonna need new gloves. Cool

I will forgo all the embarrassing questions and comments I would normally throw out there. Let’s just skip to I hope you make a full and speedy recovery. I have seen horrible accidents around machines with anything that spins. So everyone be careful , safety first !

Speedy recovery Stew. And I'm grateful key body parts remain intact. I too have not had good experience in recent years with what Ruttley refers to as  "things that spin"- angle grinder blade to the face and hand in lawn mower. Don't ask. Too embarrassing. But, happy to post pics.

Can I send you a new pair of gloves?

Man - some folks go to a lot of trouble to avoid a spring ride!

I am so glad it is not or serious and you will be healing up well.

Stew,

30 years in the custom fabrication business has taught me 2 things, Radial saws and "chop saws" are 2 of the most dangerous things. My personal joke is 30 years and still have all my fingers, but I know it's just luck. It's like the old saying there are those who ride motorcycles that have had accidents and those who will, it applies to radial and miter saws also.

I was making an aluminum mounting plate for the Cobra headlight on my bike using the small compond miter saw in my shop. Though i thought the piece of flat stock aluminum was securely clamped, it wasn't, blade grabbed it and spit it out like a bullet. The saw literaly jumped off the bench and thankfully none of my digits were near the blade.

Good luck to you and best wishes for a full recovery. It's a lesson on how we who work on and modify our rides, need to be careful.,
