Starter engaged after kill switch flipped off

This morning when I flipped the kill switch to shut the bike down I heard what sounded like the starter engaging for a split second. I had just flipped the kill switch shutting the bike down so I don't think I accidentally hit the starter button.

Has this happened to anyone? It's the second time I've noticed it did this, first time being a couple of weeks ago.

Is this a symptom of a future starter relay problem?

It could be the sound the engine makes if it comes up on the compression stroke as the spinning comes to a stop - then the engine kicks backwards.

The 95 and earlier bikes did not have a torque limiter on the starter gear, and the kick back can break the engine case. You can add the torque limiter if you have an early bike and want the protection.

So you think it's just a dumb luck I killed it in the perfect part of the stroke to make a weird noise?

It happens to me 2 or 3 times out of every 100 rides. The bike makes a weird gear noise just before the engine stops.

Same here. It's a sorta twang sound.

The circuit should go thru the ig switch, but not sure if they did that because switching noise may kill the chips.

Other option is to go manual.

Or you could water proof the little black box.

I agree with Dave that you are hearing the engine engaging the starter clutch as it rotates backward off a compression stroke when ignition is turned off. If you have an early model without the torque limiter you can just follow this procedure for shut down: while the engine is still running and in gear, hold the brake, let the clutch out just far enough to start engaging and you hear the engine start to slow down then use the kill switch to shut down. That will stop the engine dead in its tracks with no "kick back". Just be sure to turn the ignition switch off when you're done. I used that method on my '86 for years and it also stops the occasional "boom" out the exhaust after shutdown.

simply pull out the choke fully,just before turning off the kill switch . the reason the bike kicks back is because the mix is lean and explodes in the hot header pipe , backing up through the open exhaust valve . Using the choke makes the fuel in the header pipe either to rich to burn or to rich to explode.

Turn it off when the bike is off too.
That'll solve those midnight takeoffs too.
