Not too much new.  Starting to see some sooty spotty blackness coming out of the exhaust that coats the frame near the exhaust exit.  PO busted off some fins on the head doing the seals so I'm thinking about tearing into that this winter to either fix or replace the fins and look for what might be causing the sooty crap you see on the lower frame member in this pic.  Any thoughts on the source of soot?

Running rich.

How’s it running ?
What are the symptoms evident in the running of it ?
Mileage
Sluggish
Low power
Erratic
Backfire
Coughing /spitting
Hard to tune/jet properly
?

How is the bike ridden?

Does it ever get fully warmed up and ridden for an hour or two?

Does it get up to highway speeds.....or is it ridden in town between traffic lights?

It gets ridden 30-60 minutes at a time from 30-60 mph, some city and some highway.

It does backfire on throttle close.  I have no reference to know if it's sluggish, aren't they all a little sluggish stock?  Mileage in that 50 mpg area but it's been awhile since I checked.  With me on it the bike weighs about 480 pounds.  It has the stock jets, any tuning was done by the number of slots a baffle in exhaust to get a light brown plug and a light brown color on the header pipe (stainless steel single wall).  I have had it leaner and richer than it is now by adding and deleting baffle slots so I think I have a decent control handle (but maybe not optimum control handle)

Back in the old days of leaded fuel with no ethanol.....a good running engine would make a tailpipe a light tan/grey color.  Now with unleaded fuel and ethanol the tailpipe interior is always black.

I would suspect that your engine is running a bit rich - provided the black goo on the frame is not oily and just carbon.

As the needle most often is in control of the fuel/air mixture during "easy" riding - I would suggest you try changing that first.  Make the spacer on top of the needle thicker to lean out the mixture.  On a stock engine and carb setup 3 washers works well.....I believe they are #5 machine screw washers that are steel - the brass washers have too large of an OD and won't fit into the slide body.  (The original spacer is white plastic and can be sanded down if you would rather do that....but it is impossible to go back if you get it too thin).

If you get the fuel/air mixture too lean when adjusting the needle - you will feel a surge during light acceleration....the bike will not pull smoothly as you first open the throttle from idle up to around 1/2 throttle.
