Engine rattle at cold start
10/27/16 at 14:02:35
My bike makes a rattle, only at startup for about two seconds and then goes away. This only happens at cold start, if I start it after its warmed, there's no noise, should I be worried about this? Also, I used to run a motorcycle oil stabilizer, and I never got that rattle.
Thanks, RedRyder

When you start it up, is it on the sidestand? The Savage gurus here recommend having the bike upright, since the cam lobes run in an oil "bathtub" and running engine while on the sidestand might starve the cam for oil.

Rodger, no, when I start it up I put a brick under the kickstand, so it's just about vertical. I have read about side stand running, and since then I don't do it.

It may be the bendix on the starter motor hitting the starter gear. If so, it would be worth removing it and cleaning it up.

Are you sure it's the engine? The speedo tends to rattle. A cold engine is not running very well for a few seconds and may shake the bike causing something else to rattle.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

There is not a "Bendix" on the starter. There is a large gear on the crankshaft that has a roller clutch....nothing in the system would rattle.
