Hello and Question ...
05/28/16 at 10:57:08

Hello to the other members and "Thanks" to the Admins for allowing me onto the forum. My name is Paul and I am in Northern Arkansas. For starters ... I am not motorcycle savvy ... I'm a HotRod guy. But, my son has a 2007 S40 and I have been trying to help him with it. It just will not start ... here is what troubleshooting I have done.

Made sure oil level is correct.

Made sure it has enough fuel.

Made sure fuel is getting as far as the carb,

Tried spraying starter fluid directly into carb throat.

Checked to see if it was getting spark.

Spark is "Yellow/Orange" not "Fat Blue" like I read that it should be.

Timing Chain tensioner is extended nearly to max (about 18mm) ... I have read enough posts to know that this is a weakness in these bikes but will that cause it not to start?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Paul

You're getting fuel... spark may be weak...
I'm guessing old battery.
Try a jump from a car battery,(car engine not running)...
Hot to hot,.. Negative to engine ground on bike.
(you’ll probably need to rig a bit to access the positive terminal on the bike, or go under the seat to the starter relay.)...

Best luck, and welcome... Cool

Serowbot ... thanks ... yes, I tried jumping it and cranking it over while spraying starter fluid into the carb ... only got a very small back-fire after cranking for a good 20 seconds. It should be "hitting" but just won't. Wondering if it could be out of time???

It takes a lot for the camchain to jump a cog... most likely the plunger would have to have fallen completely out.
I'd put that way down on list.

Do you have a strong gas smell?...
Have you checked the vacuum line to the petcock for fuel?...
If it has fuel in it,.. the pet has a leaky diaphragm...
Try this test...http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1

...also, many attempts to start, may gas wash the cylinder and you'll lose compression... a little squirt of oil in the plug hole will re-coat the cylinder...

Be patient.. it's likely not a serious internal problem.
More opinions and ideas will be forthcoming.

This bike takes a good battery to start. I'd highly recommend doing as Serowbot suggested.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Did you check the timing? Did you check valve settings? On my rebuild of the engine I had my valves way out and was getting no compression. But we were scratching our heads for a couple hours trying to figure it out till we just went back to basics.

I have jumped the bike with a car ... cranks over fast with a jump. I have sprayed enough starting fluid in the carb to flood the cylinder and the spark plug comes out dry. Still just getting a small yellow spark. Will try another plug and see how that goes. Seems like fuel isn't getting into the combustion chamber. I have not checked the timing though.

We don't have any adjustment to timing...
Valve clearance is all you can check.
If it was running okay, then suddenly stopped, I doubt it was that.

Seems like not getting fuel?...
We're back to this test... the vac pet is a known troublemaker...

I'd check the compression. Should be 165 to 210psi. Also check the decompression adjustment. If it's to tight then it's always engaged and probably won't fire.

And check valve lash should be .004 in and ex. at TDC compression stroke.

If the plug is wet after all that cranking then it's getting fuel to the chamber.

Good  luck and don't give up.  Huh

You stated it spins over "fast"....that might be a clue the compression is low.  If you can't hear the starter working to push the piston up on the compression stroke....something is wrong.

Look as the small lever on the compression release on the top/left side of the engine.  The lever should be pulled up for a brief moment when you hit the starter button, and the lever should drop back to horizontal when the engine is spinning.  You will need to take the chrome cylinder head cap off the left side of the engine to see the compression release.
