BEST OIL FILTER
02/23/16 at 16:48:16

My 2007 S 40 is due to arrive at 11am tomorrow morning.  I am  not new to motorcycles and changing oil and filters but, was wundering what brand of oil filter is best.  It looks like it is just a cartridge.  I have always used screw on filters.  I have already purchased Rotella oil which I have used in my Kawasaki Nomad, and have purchased Red Line additive. Getting ready to check the chain adjuster and install the manual pet thingy.
The bike has 8,000 miles.

The brand of filter is not that important and yes it looks like a drum.  However, it needs to be put back with the correct side facing the engine.
Unfortunately, it has happened more than once with unfavorable results.

Best regards,

I second what pq says. Any brand is fine. Just change the oil regularly and use Rotella T or T6 oil. I like changing my oil every 2k miles or so. I bought a four pack of Hi-Flo oil filters on ebay for around 20 bucks and prior to that I had been buying Frams one at a time for about 10 bucks each.

If you're really concerned about filtering efficiency, put a magnet on top of the filter to hold any metal particles that might slip through.  Wink

The best oil filter is a clean oil filter.

Thanks, I ordered a couple HI Flo oil filters.  Watched a  video on how to install an oil filter on a S40.  I should be set.  Thanks again, Rambler

I think Suzuki recommends to replace the O-ring but it's reusable if you're careful.

The O-ring is good for a few years.  Replace it when it gets stiff or deformed.

I as well as a lot of other Savage owners use Rotella 15W 40 oil. I get stock oil filters online from bikebandit. And beware, putting an oil filter on backwards causes this:

You put fresh oil in, ride three tanks, hard, barely use oil.
You get 1,500 miles on the oil, run one tank hard, better check the oil.
And dirt falls in around the spark plug. Blow clean before pulling the plug.
