will setting decomp valve cause oil leaks?

I am new to a lot of this and wasn't sure how to adjust the decompression valve and when I firs replaced the engine it was completely loose but the bike started fined. But the bike had loss of power I then adjusted it to the point of ticking and got full power out of the bike then I read it really is only to make the bile start easier.
I have a pretty good deal of oil leaking in the area of the decomp valve. I'm not sure exactly where it is coming from yet but its the belt side and seeping from the chrome engine guard.
Should the valve tick should it be loose heeeeelp! Oil leaking suuucks :'( :'(

Decomp  can't cause an oil leak...

Set it to have a nickel width of free play, just like a clutch lever...(not sure where you'd actually put the nickle... but just some play)...

It shouldn't tick either... Huh...

Has the head cover been off? The bolt on top of the head cover, near the bracket(connected to the frame), tend get ignored. You may want to check the torque on those.

Also, check your valve inspection covers - they can have problematic O-rings.

I'm glad you said that because I was thinking it was the inspection covers. is there a good way to remedy that?

I bet it's the infamous o-ring that's leaking. This should get you started:

Go to the home page and click "Engine" on the right. Good stuff in there.

Gray goop.

Yamabond, Hondabond, Permatex high heat, etc.

Cheaper than the stock seals and longer working life.

Thanks I'll give it a try, for the meantime I slightly wrapped the o-rings in plumbers tape and the carb side inspection cover was all kinds of covered in oil the front one was slightly. I couldn't ride her yet but I'll update
