any down sides to cone filters?

Thinking of going with cone k+n filters and want to know if there are any down sides to doing this mod?
By going with cone filters you are essentially removing a mounting point for the carb ie. the connection to the air box. On another bike I used to own this meant the carb boots at the engine side had a hard time supporting the carbs by themselves and there ensued much stuffing around to try and support the carb at the other end with bits of wire and other faffing Angry

Is this an issue with the Savage?
Also I see some people are able to keep the battery box where it is and some say that you have to move it when going to cone filters - is this due to different types/sizes of cone filters? If so - which cone filters allow you to keeps battery box stock?

Yes,..
It does take away some support for the carb, and will put more stress on the intake connector... (I haven't heard of one breaking from it)...
They are more exposed, and so, will get dirty faster,.. also wet...
They'll make more intake noise...
More air turbulence going in the intake...
You'll have to get another filter for your crankcase breather... which may blow some oil around yer' engine...
They usually have less filtering area,.. so they do less filtering...

A K/N in the stock airbox will do better and give better performance,.. but If you like the look, get a cone...
Cones are cheaper...

Now, I'm going to be attacked by the cone people... Huh

I was wondering the same thing Strang as I am replacing the air filter now and not sure how far to take the replacement approach. I like the cleaner look of the Cone but question the ability of handling wet situations and what side effects it may bring. I know going with K&N Cone and intake upgrades on my car drove a lot more blow back through the valve cover breather, didn't realize the bike would be all that similarly affected.

I am curious though, where do people move their batteries too if the room is needed. I have tried looking at pics of the Bobber bikes to figure out where things are moved, like with the smaller rear fender, and having trouble getting that understanding.

Answer two questions about your riding style.

1) do you ride in the rain often

2)so you ride gravel or dirt roads very much

If the answer to either is yes,then stay stock or at least K&N in the stock airbox.

If you answered no to both,go for the cone as other hassles can be overcome with a bit of thought and a little work.

I think I'll go K+N in the stock air box as I am looking at upgrading performance as much as I can without hassle. The only "look" I'm really worried about is a big grin on my face from no hassle cruising. Not knocking cones though

Reply #7 - 11/05/12 at 05:26:06 Unless youre changing the cam & going all out on that motor, I doubt youll ever see any change by swapping air filter, but if you do drop that $$$, make sure you keep the old filter around, so if youre in the middle of cleaning & oiling the K&N, yu can slip the paper in & run,

You get better performance w/ more filter area, not less. The only way more performance can be gained w/ less filter area, is less filter material, and less filter material material is an engine killer ! Its always been that way My 2 cents
