Torque Question
12/21/11 at 20:43:10

I removed the engine covers for polishing.  Now that they are ready to put back together, I can not find the information for the torque specifications for the bolts that holds the engine covers. Not even in the Clymers manual. Does anyone knows?

A nice 1/4" ratchet & a careful hand will do the job just fine. You can feel a bolt pull tight. Go back & forth across it, heck, start with a nut driver & just land them, then firm them up, then tighten them. No hassles with a torque wrench needed. They dont hold the bike together. They arent lug nuts, theyre skinny little, cheap bolts. Treat them like theyre old & sweaty dynamite & they wont blow up in your face.,

Or you can replace the OEM bolts with grade 10.9 stainless steel bolts.  Then you'll definitely not snap them.  Btw, use a lower torque than recommended.  I found that motor oil gets into the threads, and decreases the torque felt while tightening them.  I used about 70% of the listed torque? (I forget the exact number)

you're better off snapping a bolt then stripping out the case.
