Winding noise when I let off of the throttle
09/21/11 at 05:10:21

When I'm riding and I let off the gas a hear a winding noise, it seems to go away when I get back on the throttle. I'm going to head out and do some troubleshooting, just wondering if anybody knows what this could be. Thanks

It comes from the belt (if it's the noise I hear at times).
Could be dirty or a bit loose.

Check your tension.  Grab belt in the middle at the bottom and try to twist it.  If it goes over 90 degrees, tighten it up a bit.  Maybe a 1/4 turn on the adjusters at a time.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

I get the exact opposite. I get a whirring, almost metalic whining noise when I am ON the throttle. Goes away when I let off. Seems to come from left side of bike. Haven't been able to pinpoint it yet. I have suspected the belt, but I am at 90*. I also bashed the bottom of motor on a gigantic rock, so I may have other things going on inside, but it almost sounds clutch related. I also have tried bee's wax and baby powder on the belt. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Undecided

I'm betting it's the belt. Mine has done it for a while now. I don't worry about it at all.

I have started to notice the same thing over the past couple of days.  I am glad you asked this question!  I'll check my belt tension.

mine did that on decel - i always figured it was the belt - after i changed the rear tire and re-adjusted the belt tension it no longer makes that noise on accel or decel.....my vote 90% it is belt related.

Well I tightened up the belt a little bit and that seems to be what was making the noise. It still does it just a little bit but you can barely hear it. much butter, thanks guys

Mine had developed a hideous squeal, so I tightened the belt tension, about a half-turn on each bolt - it still had a bit, so I'd seen where beeswax was mentioned by drums1. Hmmm, I had a stick of lip-balm on hand & put a good dab on my finger, wiping it on the belt - problem solved! Stay safe.  Smiley
