Painted Muffler - Looks Cool!
09/10/11 at 20:58:04

Well after wrapping the exhaust header the muffler got quite a bit hotter than normal which made it blue quite a bit more. So I decided to paint it with the high temp paint. Went to autozone and bought primer, black, and clearcoat. Taped off the end of the muffle that I wanted to leave chrome and sanded the rest. Primed it and painted it! I didn't use the clear though because it was glossy. But I did use it on my primary once I painted it black and removed the aluminum cover. (no pics) I thought it came out pretty good for a guy with no painting skills so I thought I would share!

I thot that high temp paint was meant to go one w/o a primer,, I didnt know they had a primer for high heat,, & I sure didnt know there was a clear coat that would handle high heat,, where did you get that stuff?

Autozone!!! 6 bucks a can. I wish they made a satin/flat clear coat but i havent found one yet. Im sure you can do it without a primer but I got a better coat and finish with the primer I think.

Have you been riding it? Any signs of the paint messing up yet?

I went for a long ride last night after I finished it. I did what was recommended on the can of "baking" the paint. It directs to run the bike on idle for ten minutes and then let cool, do that same thing again for 20 min and let cool, and then operate bike at normal speed. I'm sure eventually I might have to repaint, but it definitely won't be anytime soon as there are about 4-5 coats of primer and 4-5 coats of black haha. someone asked if it was powdercoated haha.

You have a lot better chance of the muffler chipping and scratching by adding too many coats. I have learned that when painting a single base coat is usually all that is needed. The clear coar brings out the deep color. But if the paint is too thick, it gets mushy when hot.
