Trouble and need advice
07/13/11 at 16:30:17

I started out for a short ride and soon after heading out the bike stalled out...manged to crank it back over and get home but now it seems the bike will start with no issues but as soon as I kick into first gear it dies...oil level is good, still plenty of gas it was fine last week when I took it out so I am cluesless as to what the problem could be and I am not mechanically inclined....any suggestions from the fatihfull here ??

What exactly are you doing when the bike stalls?

Disconnect and clean the contacts on the two wire plug that goes to the clutch lever on the left handlebar...
The contacts are dirty... Wink...

It's either that,.. or it's the contacts on the kickstand cut-out... For them,.. you'll have to trace the wire from the kickstand up to the connector under the seat... (it might be green, I can't remember)...
If you can't figure the right one,.. just unplug and replug everything you can find under there... Grin...

Spray the contacts with w40, or rub then with a pencil eraser... actually, just disconnecting and reconnecting will usually do it, but cleaning will make it less likely to happen again..

i will now show my complete ignorance for my aptitude..all I see is a single wire cable from the clutch handle down to the transmission case with the couple of hex nuts that i assume adjust tension down towards the engine casing, on the handle bar end is just a flange type rubber covering from where the cable meets the clutch lever...BTW it is a 2001 LS650 with only 6500 miles on it and was fully serviced last year with new tires, front brake and brand new battery

Underside of the lever,... black plastic connector, with a yellow wire and a yellow w/green stripe...

You're looking at the clutch cable...   Grin...

I will now sit the rest of the evening in the corner proudly wearing my dunce cap because YES...I had the kickstand down when I was attempting to put it in gear thus the quick kill of the engine...not still sure why it sputtered and stalled out initially but will give it another go tomorrow once I have completed my 'time out' punishment....Thanks gentlemen and or depending gentleWOmen (politically correct effort) for the advice Undecided

billyattitude You are so dumb you are nearly half as bad as me. I bought my Savage March of 2009 and have about 7500 miles on it. Today I was zipping along playing with the throttle and noticed the most wonderful acceleration. I bought some different gas yesterday than usual and immediatley decided to get more. As I merged onto the Hwy I opened it up and realized...I was in fourth gear, not fifth, during the previous fun. Half way dropped it last week. Only thing that saved me was my ankle against the curb and a gas pump to hit my head on. Otherwise I could have scratched the bike. You ain't done nothing we ain't done. IfIrc The going dead with kickstand down was in my third week of riding. Grin Grin

The second week I had my savage I had an experience like that, after I accelerated quickly up an interstate on ramp.  I rode it hard and got going quick and a few seconds later it just quit on me.  I checked around me good and coasted over to the shoulder.  I was freaking because I just bought the bike.  After a few panicked minutes of trying to start it with no luck I thought, GAS!!!  Switched it to reserve, it fired back up and my blood pressure went back down.

Out in front of a bike shop in Valdosta, GA, one day a few decades ago, a USAF kid (in uniform, an E-3) stopped by on his new Kawasaki UJM something or other, came in and started bragging to the guys hanging out there that his bike could stomp on any of theirs.

Being in the USAF (but in civvies at that moment), I was a teense annoyed that he was being so obnoxious but I just hung back to see what developed.  I think he actually wanted one of more of the folks there to come out and ride around with him so, as he put it, "I can stomp your ass anytime."

There were no takers.

Eventually he walked out, got on his bike, put his helmet on without buckling it, started it up, let out the clutch, lurched out into the street,..and promptly/forcefully fell over.  His helmet rolled across the street causing an oncoming car driven by an old lady to sideswipe another car to avoid the helmet.

Seems he sorta forgot to unlock the fork lock.

I've had mine for about 5 years now and just recently, after having major work done on it , and then causing major damage riding over a small boulder, I went to start it up after doing a weeks worth of garage-type repairs. (ie; JB Weld) Key on, gas in, choke out......nothing. After pounding my head on the garage floor for about 10 minutes, it dawned on me.....turn the ignition switch on, idiot. Started right up. DUH !!!

Was going down a hill a few weeks ago and my bike shut off for no apparent reason and wouldnt restart. Come to find out, out of the blue the ignition switch was turned off. I must have flipped it off unknowingly because there's no way vibrations would do that.

I have one of these watches clipped to my right side mirror.

Every now and then I will go  over a good sized bump and the watch  will bounce and hit the kill switch. The first time this happened to me, I sat on the side of the road trying to figure out the problem for quite a while before I finally figured it out. I felt kinda stupid but I never expected for that to happen. It's happened a few times since then but I know what it is right away and usually hit the switch before the bike loses much speed.
