Increased Alternator Output (more juice)
12/11/10 at 10:42:50

I just found out that Accel makes a stator and rectifier for the S 40 that "substantially increases the power." Has anyone installed these? My reason for asking is I want to add more lights and therefore need more juice. They are at J&P cycle.

The same stator for the LS650 is used in the VS1400.  If it puts enough for a 1400cc Intruder.....

Idk if this will be absolutely necessary. I will be adding 2 35watt hid fogs, and to compensate, I calculated that if all other lights are replaced with LEDs (except headlight), the headlight and fogs should be able to run off the stock stator. I'll be doing this over the next couple of weeks and post my results online. Roughly $50 worth of leds.

Seems like a pretty ambiguous claim.

Not saying I know but, if the rotors and stators are the same, you'll get the same output.  Is the savage rotor the same as a VS1400?

Just what is the output for the stock stator and what is the normal draw w/o accessories? Search doesn't give me an answer.
Knowing the net output would help since
I'm wanting to calculate what heated gear will work best.
Thanks!

10.3 Amps/210 watts at 5000 rpm

Where did the 10.3 come from ?

210 watts divided by 12v = 17.5 amps,.....I was right the first time.
But then, it should really be divided by about 13.5 charging volts, which would bring it below 16 amps,.......and then lower the R's to a more average 3,000, and the amps will be less too.

Anybody know the minimum rpm to charge the battery given all the lights are on?  From that you will be able to estimate the rpm to generate the surplus watts to run your accesseries.  And heaven help you if you stop to fill up and stay plugged in.  Push starting on an icey road is going to be fun.   Shocked

I am not an electrician so I don't see an answer here. I want to add lights on a stock 1986. Clymer shows about 160 watts for the lights but I can't find the watts for ignition if there is any. Without getting technical, how many watts can I add for lights? If there is not much, I may try LED which I think takes less???

If you switch the headlight to HID, and all the rest of the lights to LED, you'll be using only about a third of what you were before.  This will give you more for heated clothes, GPS, more lights, etc.

If I don't switch everything, how much room do I have ? The bike is stock.

You don't have much room over stock. MAYBE 20 watts but I wouldn't try it. I'm still working on replacing all my lights with leds and the headlight with an HID. I actually have all the parts, just never have the time to do it. The brake light I'll be using is a 3.5 watt LED vs 35 watts stock. That's one 35 watt light I can put in just by replacing the brake light alone. Between the turn sugnals, license plate light and speedo lights, switching them all to LED, I can afford another 35 watt light.

So if I put 2 3.5 watt LED lights on the back hooked up to the brakelight and 2 3.5 watt LED lights hooked up to a switch on the front, I should be ok. I'll wait a few minutes to switch on front lights to charge the battery a bit.

Yes, you should be okay, but to be honest with you, 3.5 watt LEDs probably won't give off enough light up front. And do you mean 2 axillary brake lights in the back?

The plan was 2 extra lights at the back about 20 watts each and 2 driving lights at the front about 40 watts each for a total of 120 watts. Your post says you replaced the 35 watt with a 3.5 LED so isn't the LED 1/10 of the stock and I can go total of 12 watts total? I don't want to change the other lights. Seems to be a lot of guys working on bikes but I couldn't find how much power I have to work with.

just short trips (6 mile round ) my battery slowlly goes down.   It seem it takes more to start it that gets replaced.

To solve the problem I put a 18 watt yellow light in the headlight on a switch to replace the low beam  (day-light running light).   I switch back to regular after dark.

Whats that about a HID headlight ?   What kind of watt saving is that?

O yea  Also did the LED tail/brake light.

Smiley
