Timing Inspection Plug Removal?

I built a wonderful tool using the correct thickness steel and a 12mm socket. the socket fits on my heavy duty impact driver.
I started with a quick rap from a rubber mallet...no luck. I moved up to a light rap with a 3lb maul…no luck! I tried a few moderate licks …no luck!

For those that have removed this plug, how hard can I go? Is the plug and the case thick enough to wail on without holing them?
I have tried CW and CCW both trying to break it loose. Nothing welds itself better than hot aluminum.

Get a THICK putty knife and cut the blade to about one inch long. grind the end to fit the plug. Most of the time my grip on the handle is enough but if it gets stubborn, hold it in one hand and turn it with a small crescent wrench. Phelonius

I tried holding the blade and turning with a crecent wrench...not even close.
That's why I went to an impact driver. I wonder if a little red lock-tight was used by the PO?
I will try heating the case and then chilling the plug with dry ice. Maybe I can shrink it a bit.

And I will be careful with the hammer

Do you suppose a previous owner used J.B. weld for thread lubricant?

Reply #8 - 06/08/09 at 11:48:45 If it is still stuck, try putting a piece of wood over the plug and giving it a good smack with a hammer. The outside rim of this plug will come in contact with the case when overtightened or the oring ages. A little moisture in there and it corrodes together.
