Starter Clutch

As an update, the engine problem that took me off the road last fall was caused by a broken valve that totally f*&%ed the piston, cylinder and head. I found another engine (most of one anyway) and my brother-in-law and I are working on getting everything back together.

All has gone well so far, but 2 of the things I needed from my old bike are the starter and starter clutch.

Everything fit together nicely, but now this part won't fit:

The cog is locked in place on the shaft and won't line up with the idler cog.

According to what I have been told, my old bike was an '86 and the new(er) engine is from a '97. Has something changed through the years that isn't mentioned in the Clymers or are we missing something?

Thanks in advance folks.

Thanks vroom. I searched first and missed that one.

Just for clarification, if I get the 2 small gears, is that it, or do I need a new cover too?

Naw Krop is the pro on this area - I guess he has a europe only year model - 91 or 93 - but here's some comments he made:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;n...

so it reads like the old cover will not work with the newer gears and axle without some modification

There was also some kind of change made to decrease the backlash problem.

Guess I'll need to drop by the stealership to check it out.

I've also put a request on the market place for the parts.
Thanks

Are you putting '86 parts in the '97?

Is this the bad boy part that you are needing?

(forget the timing mark note)

No other cover needed.
Get the missing parts from the IPC of Ron Ayers for a 1997 engine. The cover is a '97 model so the gears and the limiter as pictured by Greg_650  must be  installed.

Thanks again guys. Those are the parts I need.

Yes, the new(er) engine is a 97 that was was missing the starter and these clutch components. The Clymer doesn't show the newer parts.
