Engine Does not want to idle
07/24/05 at 13:25:28

Lucky me. Got my first ride in the rain. Legs soaking wet, visor with drops of rain stuck to it, never mind.

When I wanted to put the bike in the shed the engine does not want to idle any more. Tried again after 15 minutes, started right up but I had to use the throttle to keep the engine running.
Any ideas?

Just a shot in the dark here Smiley Have you try to run it PRIME? If it idle, then your vaccum tube have small leaking somewhere. My guess is when you use the throttle to keep it running--> it has more vaccum on the tube to compensate for the leak to keep the petc$ck open for the gas to go thru.

Otherwise, as in aviation mechanic's world "Get back to the troubleshooting chart" Undecided

PRIme only gives you uncontrolled gas.  If the petcock doesn't work, it won't run "off idle" either.

Choke out?  Water in the gas?  Crap in your bowl (carb bowl that is)?  Smiley

Anything that's been changed or happened?

Nothing changed. Just a ride in the rain and when I wanted to park the bike, I usualy leave it running when I openen the shed's door, it would not idle.

A possibility (happened to me) . . . perhaps your idle mixture screw vibrated it's way loose?  Mine idle's best at 1/2 turn.  One time after a long ride, it was out 5 turns!  Also, one of the nuts holding my right footpeg vibrated out in the same ride.

I think all the planets aligned that day or something and my bike vibrated at just the right frequency to loosen everything up.

Put some locktite on the footpeg nut and turned the idle screw back in and it's been fine ever since.

Mine used to have problems with operating in the rain. Turned out that the wiring harness connectors covers had gotten some moisture in them, causing an intermittent short.  I let it dry out and taped the connectors. ALL of them. It worked fine after that.

First of all, thanks for the suggestions and advice.

Yesterday I went to my bike, drained the carb. bowl in a clean jar to check if there was moisture in the fuel, nothing.
Put the fuelc0ck to PRI for 20 seconds, switched to ON, pulled the choke, and the engine fired right-up.

After a while pushed the choke in and the engine ran as before. Idle 1150rpm. Respond to the throttle OK.

So I think I have to wait for another ride in the rain.
