i would recomend the purchase.
the clacking sound is completley normal.
it's a great bike for all levels of riding.
it's lightweight and nimble, yet has the torque to pull you out of any situation. pick the wrong gear, no problem with a savage, gearing is easy.

on the cons side.
small fuel capacity,
not that comfortable for second rider.
needs rejetting for optimal performance.
not alot of accessories, you can adapt just about anything though.

buy the darn thing. have some fun.

I got a 2000 w/5K miles, missing right side cover, needing battery and tires, $2325 delivered -- I'm happy, your's sounds to be a better deal.  (probably between elated and estatic.)

I paid $2000 for mine which is a 2002 with 8000 miles.  Yours sounds like a great deal.  It's my first bike, and as a gal I can honestly say I've loved learning to ride on it.  My husband briefly had a Virago  and now has a Volusia and both were a little intimidating to me.  The Savage is perfect! SmileyHi! We're all a little biased here Wink ... but truth is, the LS650 is a highly underated, underappreciated motorcycle ('cept by those who own 'em!) ... one of the best bargains (even brand new) and best kept secrets in the m/c industry ... and it sounds like the '01 you're looking at is a deal too!
Good luck, enjoy and Ride Safe!

This is a good deal. If You want more unbiased opinion  just check  eBay for the pricing.
About the clicking sound- this is the way it is supposed to be. The first click is the decompressor solenoid.

I paid $2200 for a '98 with 1640 miles on it 11 months ago.  Sounds like a good deal.

This is my first m/c and I have been extremely impressed with the responsiveness. My wife has now taken an interest and wants to learn how to ride it. May have to purchase another Smiley

I ended up getting a great deal for a 2001 with only 130 miles on it for $1900 but it needed a new front footpeg and mirror because it had been dropped. No other real damage except a scrape to the left shock.

I would strongly encourage purchasing a thumper, especially for a first time rider.

Good luck.

If it fits, buy it, you won't regret it. If it is too small, walk away, there are lots of other good bikes on the market. Are the others as good as the Savage? No, you can't ask a 250 to do a real engine's job...by the same token, if the Savage is too little, you can't ask a 650 in a 250 frame to do a 650/800/1100 or 1500 cc multi-cylinder  larger platform's job.

I know I'll get slammed, but, if the bike isn't right, then the bike isn't right...
