why does this connect to the starter relay?

Edit:

Answer- The CDI changes timing when the engine is first starting.

if anyone needs a new connector altogether (like I did), here is where I found it.

hey splash,
i swaped out the engine from a 1986 to a 2006, everything is the same except the wiring plug for the cdi, wich i also bought for a 2006). when i went on the website you posted they want to charge you like 600 bucks for delivery, what going on with that?
also, the service manual deos not show you the wiring configuration on to the plug. i would really like to know where each wire geos. there are 6 wires and 8 pins on the connector.

thanks a lot

So this guy is located in Japan so you have to spend at least 20 bucks or he charges an outrageous amount in shipping, once you have over 20 in your cart the shipping goes down and is actually pretty reasonable for international orders. As for the wire placement I cant help out much there, It was trial and error the first time I did it on mine. I vaguely remember seeing a thread in here somewhere with that info but I would have to search a bit to find it.
