Looking at Ron Ayers and yes the last  character corresponds to year, before '01 it was letters...

This is from the link at Ron Ayers, Mr. 650 posted:

LS650P SAVAGE 1986 (G)
LS650P SAVAGE 1987 (H)
LS650P SAVAGE 1988 (J)
LS650P SAVAGE 1995 (S)
LS650P SAVAGE 1996 (T)
LS650P SAVAGE 1997 (V)
LS650P SAVAGE 1998 (W)
LS650P SAVAGE 1999 (X)
LS650P SAVAGE 2000 (Y)
LS650P SAVAGE 2001 (K1)
LS650P SAVAGE 2002 (K2)
LS650P SAVAGE 2003 (K3)

It got me wondering why K1, K2 etc...  Then I thought of y2k.  My guess is they are using the K to stand for 1,000 which kinda makes sense.  Would make more sense if it was 2K1, 2K2, etc... but more cumbersome.

So we now know what the end designation stands for but what does "LS" stand for and how about "P"?

I think I read somewhere that the "P" stands for models with the pullback bars vs. the cafe (drag? ... I don't know the correct term) bars that some of the earlier models had, and now the '05 S40 also has.

Just to add to the confusion, Honda has used 'K' in their model designations since around 1968.  Apparently, Suzuki thought it kind of cute and copied?  Wink

The official model ID for the S40 is LS650K5.

I know my 1981 GS250T stood for Gran Sport 250 Twin.  Not a real sporty bike, though.  85 mph top speed, down hill, wind at my back, screaming, laying on the tank.  Oh, that's the bike screaming, and me when that grasshopper nailed me in the arm at that speed.
