Let's look at what is available in a mid-weight (500-800cc) cruiser style bike:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Honda VLX, 583cc, 452 lbs
Honda Shadow Spirit 750, 745cc, 496 lbs
Kawasaki 500 LTD, 498cc, 439 lbs
Kawasaki 750, 749cc, 483 lbs
Kawasaki 800, 805cc, 496 lbs
Royal Enfiled Bullet* 499cc, 370 lbs
Suzuki Boulevard S50, 805cc, 443 lbs
Yamaha V-Star Custom, 649cc, 474 lbs
*not a v-twin, not a cruiser

Suzuki LS650 Savage/Boulevard S40:  652cc, 352 lbs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Enfield, a smaller single, is 18 pounds heavier.  All of the V-Twins are 87 to 144 pounds heavier than the Savage.

Methinks LS stands for Lightweight Single.

I know light weight was my primary criteria.

In October 1986 Cycle World roadtested the LS650 and measured 41 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm.  Seems a bit high to me, but where else can you get a 352# motorcycle with that kind of stump pulling energy?

Light & Strong

p.s. In August 1996 Cycle World tested again and claimed 31.4 lb-ft at 3300 rpm. Either way, it still appears the strongest per pound.

We are a silly bunch, aren't we?  But back to jbird's original question, does anyone know if it stands for anything?

jbird, I've always assumed it was one of those silly naming mechanisms that didn't mean anything but I am happy to be proven wrong...

In the automobile world, and on my Malibu LS, it stands for Luxury Sedan (which is a bit of a stretch).  Maybe that's it.

Now my curiousity is aroused. I haven't found the answer to this yet but I did find a model chart quite some time back when I was researching an older bike of mine (a 1982 GS550LZ) The "L" for that time frame indicated it was a cruiser class and the "Z" meant it was a standard edition. I don't know what the classifications for the "LS" are but I am leaning towards "cruiser-standard" or "cruiser-single (for the engine spec)". Just guessing at this point. My series and body style are listed as the "LS650PK2" so there's a couple of other specs to find also.... I'm sure one of us will find the real answer soon.

My serious guess is that 'S' stands for Sport.  It does with the S40.

Do the Japanese models have a different letter designation?  I'm sure the letter looks different.  I wonder if it has a Japanese meaning.

I am pretty sure the last number indicates the year.  Mine ends with a 4 and I have an '04.

Looking at Ron Ayers and yes the last  character corresponds to year, before '01 it was letters;

This is from the link at Ron Ayers, Mr. 650 posted:

LS650P SAVAGE 1986 (G)
LS650P SAVAGE 1987 (H)
LS650P SAVAGE 1988 (J)
LS650P SAVAGE 1995 (S)
LS650P SAVAGE 1996 (T)
LS650P SAVAGE 1997 (V)
LS650P SAVAGE 1998 (W)
LS650P SAVAGE 1999 (X)
LS650P SAVAGE 2000 (Y)
LS650P SAVAGE 2001 (K1)
LS650P SAVAGE 2002 (K2)
LS650P SAVAGE 2003 (K3)

It got me wondering why K1, K2 etc...  Then I thought of y2k.  My guess is they are using the K to stand for 1,000 which kinda makes sense.  Would make more sense if it was 2K1, 2K2, etc... but more cumbersome.

So we now know what the end designation stands for but what does "LS" stand for and how about "P"?

;D

I think I read somewhere that the "P" stands for models with the pullback bars vs. the cafe (drag? ... I don't know the correct term) bars that some of the earlier models had, and now the '05 S40 also has.

Just to add to the confusion, Honda has used 'K' in their model designations since around 1968.  Apparently, Suzuki thought it kind of cute and copied?  ;)

The official model ID for the S40 is LS650K5.

I know my 1981 GS250T stood for Gran Sport 250 Twin.  Not a real sporty bike, though.  85 mph top speed, down hill, wind at my back, screaming, laying on the tank.  Oh, that's the bike screaming, and me when that grasshopper nailed me in the arm at that speed.
