Oil Seal Front Forks
05/31/24 at 09:23:46

In the process of researching fork braces and inspecting my forks more closely, I discovered one of my front forks is leaking a bit.  I've never worked on forks or replaced oil seals before.

It looks like I need a pair of part #7 oil seals on the diagram.  What other parts should I also replace while in there?

Not sure I'm up to this job or have whatever special tools may be needed.  I haven't pulled out the Clymer Manual yet.  Sigh...

Thanks Verslagen.  I was planning to visit there.  Just trying to gather a parts list.

I always inspect the bushings when I have the forks apart. You may also want to check the free length of the springs.

My 2004 Bobber had leaking fork seals with only 12k miles. I really didn't want to rebuild the forks being I'm a lazy bastard. I'd rather be riding. I tried this tool called Seal mate or some such thing. Got it on Amazon for like $10. You pull up the wiper seal not the actual oil seal. Slide this tool between the fork and the seal and rotate it around the fork legs a couple of times to clean out any dirt that is trapped in there. I worked great. 300 miles later and there is no leaking what so ever. Check it out. Used it on my Buell with 25k miles with the same results.  Grin

Yup.  The Seal Mate was mentioned by youzguys in the Tech Section article.

Being a cheap bastard myself, I used an old thin plastic healthcare ID card to run it around the folk and seal.  We'll see if that fixes it.  I'd prefer not to open up the forks myself.
