Whenever I'm messing with that front pulley nut, I put the bike in neutral first so as not to pressure the gears.  Let the rear tire take the torque.

+1 What Serow said. I make sure the bike is in neutral and since I have mine strapped to a post where it holds vertical on its own, I sit on the bike to give the rear tire some pressure to avoid spinning and push the ratchet (with long breaker bar or pipe extension) with my left hand enough to break the nut loose, then get off and manage it from there.
