Nicks in drive belt normal?
10/18/21 at 16:10:06

front pulley teeth look ok, but rear pulley teeth and belt have evident nicks. How normal? Belt is a real annoying squealer

Looks like small bits of road grime/pebbles.  I see the same issue on a Subaru vbelt in my Baja Bug.  Sand and bits of dirt sticking in the rubber.

Normal, or worrisome, you think?

I think it's normal, but you should pick that stuff out.  If it accumulates too much, replace the belt.  Clean the pulley if you replace the belt.

Also not to derail, but that's a sweet buggy.  I grew up in the East County of San Diego where Baja Bugs were abundant.  And yours is tight.

Those look like metal shavings. Most likley from wear on the front pulley. That is why they had to weld it. You have a huge belt alignment issue. Never seen one that bad before.

I was thinking the same.  I've been through plenty of dirt on my bike and the belt didn't get that type /consistency of buildup.  I recall seeing on here a pretty jacked up pulley from abnormal wear, almost sharpening the teeth on it.

Would it be best to check the integrity/alignment of the rear pulley as well?

I'd think this bike is a good candidate for a front pulley replacement and a rear bushing upgrade.

There's your best advice.  Do that and see if anything comes back.  Brass brushes are pretty soft and great to have around.

Thanks very, very much gents. I think the belt photograph is misleading. That's not actually stuff, it is shreds of the belt material itself.

Dave will eventually send me a front pulley. How can I find out more about the bushing upgrade, and where to get the parts? This absolutely feels like something I have to take to a mechanic. I presume the rear wheel Hass to be raised in free for belt alignment? And of course disassembled for bushing replacement? I've never seen any of our Boulevards on a retail available rear stand. and looking at some recommended rear stands, I don't see how they will connect to our bikes. Anybody got pictures for a knucklehead?

  Bike lift thread:

Rear pulley upgrade thread, I believe these have been sold here on the Marketplace, also Dave had another version that is on one of my bikes and works fine.

That is even worse! The belt should NOT be wearing off pieces like that. Scrape some off and see if a magnet will pick them up, if it does, there not belt.
Grab your rear pulley and try to wobble it sideways, it should barely move. If it moves a lot you need the double row bearing upgrade. ( and a new front pulley )
