After Market Carb
05/11/21 at 20:27:54

Hi All - I'm sure this has probably been addressed at some point on here, but I'm not having any luck finding it (please forgive me if this is a redundant ask).

We've put a Mikuni 36mm (VM36-4) carb on our little bobber and it works great for the most part, but I'm seeing some throttle hesitation.  I notice it most in 3rd at higher revs - basically, I run out of throttle about 1/2 to 3/4 pull.
It bogs down and I have to assume it's the main jet.  Looking at the plug, it looks like we're running a little rich.  We're buying a jet kit but we're kind of shooting in the dark...

(Oh, btw, we're using a pod "air cleaner" with just a screen on the carb, nothing else.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

We really need more information to help you out.

Where did you get the carburetor?

What jets and needle are currently installed.  In particular, we need to know what needle jet, main jet, and slide needle.  Those would be the items that affect the range of operation you describe.

What petcock are you running?  If it doesn't provide adequate flow you may be running out of fuel at high rpm.

"(Oh, btw, we're using a pod "air cleaner" with just a screen on the carb, nothing else.)"

Please post a picture of your air cleaner setup.  What is this screen you describe?

Hi DragBikeMike - thanks for the reply!  Sorry I was so vague.

I've actually got some good info from this post:

That thread will set you right on the principals but it is referring to the stock carb.
The aftermarket VM36 will take different jet sizes I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
When set up right a genuine Mikuni VM36 is an excellent choice by all accounts.

Geoff.
