Surprise winter project- Starting issue

Could use some advice.
1986 6k miles

When I bought it, I was told it needed a new horn button and Bendix spring in the starter.

Purchased new starter assembly and after install it seems to mostly spin free. At one point it did catch and turn the bike over enough to start for just a moment with a quick rev. After that it has just been spinning again. I should mention that in the moment it did turn the bike over, it sounded bad. Lots of grinding.

Before I pull the stator cover off and see if it needs an upgrade to the newer torque limiter gears, or whatever is going on in there, any tips for removal? Looks like the pegs and shifter need to come out.  Battery showing 12.47 volts on multimeter. This is after trying to start it some without recharging.

Be sure the washer is in the right place when you put the left side cover back on. It can mess up several things. Use a little grease to ''glue'' it on or the magnet can pull it off and bad things happen. Bad things.
