3 1/2 weeks ago I bought a 2009 S40 Calif with 938 miles. The second original owner bought it in 2009 with 550 miles. That math is 388 miles in 11 years.
Installed new Raptor Petcock. Twice done a thorough cleaning of the OEM carb. Installed a new bowl valve seat and float needle. Drilled out the welch plug. Plugged up the return hose (the one wrapped in wire that goes from the carb right side to the back of the OEM petcock. Brand new Yusua battery.
It was pretty gummed up and the throttle was froze but I got it running (thanks to this board). However it runs like a slug. 53mph top speed, hardley any acceleration. Probably running rich the air/fuel screw makes little difference. Awaiting a brand new Murry carburator (hopefully today).

A Mikuni 36 or 38 mm carb would cost less than half that, and there is plenty of information on this site to help with adjusting it. it. I've been working on bikes for over 40 years and have never heard of a Murray carb.

So here is the problem.

You didn't isolate the problem to be the carb. Then you went and bought a carb that, as far as I know, has not been integrated onto a Savage.

So when you install the Murray onto the bike, and you have a continuation of the current issue - or new issues - is it the bike...or is it the carb? Who knows.

I'm all for experimenting, but you have to address the existing issues before you introduce new potential issues.

So, if you are certain that the OEM carb was working correctly, yet you had issues with power, the next logical step is a leak down test to see if you have an issue with the valves, rings or piston.

Hap-hazzardly swapping parts is a recipe for never solving the original problem.

What is this welch plug that you drilled out?

I'm with Gary. Swapping parts will only get you a different carb that you'll have to figure out how to tune, because it's unlikely it will be setup for the S40.

The real deal is this bike should run perfectly fine with a stock carb. I would focus on finishing the rehab on what you have or replacing it with a stock carb.

Got a hitch in the throttle but it's probably the routing. Been working on this bike for 3 1/2 weeks and know that OEM carb like a relative. If I had to do it again I would.

The idle fuel/air screw has no affect on how the bike runs.....except at idle.

And on the Savage - you cannot adjust the mixture unless you slow the idle speed down around 800rpm. At the suggested 1,100 rpm idle speed the slide is starting to lift and the fuel coming in the jet needle prevents you from being able to properly adjust the screw.

I had the same problem

bought a motorcycle that sat for 6+ years.

bought new battery and throttle grips. did a carb rebuilt and it wouldn't acceleration pass ~50 mph. Felt like the bike would push and pull at certain rpms.

I did remember I once turn the air-fuel mixture screw 4 turns (not recommended) but it ran like normal. What this did was kept the pilot circuit open feeding more fuel but after a week of riding the fuel overfilled into the oil pan. Did a quick oil drain and opened up the main jet to allow for more fuel. (after testing all parts of the carburetor were functioning, and spark plug condition, etc)

Drill the main jet to 1/16". runs like a champ.

Removing/cleaning/replacing this carb twice on a bike with 938 miles on it got me to the point of desperation and frustration. I'm 73, Viet vet, survived 2 cases of cancer, lost my wife of 50 years. I've been riding since I was 12. Never have I ever had to worship a carburatior like this. This board has helped with encouragement, knowledge, Pictures and many miles of input. Youtube was also a irreplaceable help. I'm not rich but if a pro says he has a plug-and-play carb that will work.....I'm gonna try it.
