"Chirping" noise all of a sudden...
03/29/20 at 10:15:45
I've had my S40 for month or so now and have put maybe 500 miles on it so far. Odometer says 3500 total miles.
Today I was out on some long and straight country roads and was cruising at about 65 mph much of the time...All of a sudden there was a chirping sound. It was very high pitched. It had not made this noise before...My intuition was and still is that it wasn't the engine or transmission and likely not the drive belt as it seemed to be emanating from the top of the bike, and so my hunch is it might well be the speedometer and more to the point, perhaps the speedo cable.
Any comments or advice is appreciated..
I am thinking it may be worthwhile to lube the speedo cable? Any thoughts on that or what lubricant to use if I do that?
Many thanks..

I forgot to say that the "chirping" sound only is heard at 60 Mph or faster.

Use engine oil, some does seep up from the tranny.

The Speedo housing can also make noise at certain rpm. Most people describe it as a a rattle but you know, words are like that!
You can test it by pressing firmly on the speedo at that speed. If the noise stops, that'll be it. There are three springs in the housing (accessed by removing the tank). You can take the springs out and stretch them to about 50% longer and put them back in.
Other users have lived them, or replaced them with rubber tubes etc.
