Petcock...searched found nothing
03/28/20 at 09:12:44

I have two 650 Thumpers, a 96 and a 2009.  Yesterday I tried to set the petcock on one of them to Reserve and had no luck...Then I tried to do the same on the other one and could not move it either...

Seeing as both could not be moved, I am wondering if something is wrong or if I do not know how to do it.

Please advise me.  Thank you...  Undecided

Are they both frozen, unable to move, or they move but just not into the Prime position?

Both are frozen in place...They both are on the "run" designation...I have only had the bikes for a few months and have never tried to move them before.

Thank you.

Bokobob, First rule of Savages, replace the petcock with one from a Yamaha Raptor. I will add to that one of first rules of riding motorcycles is to set petcock to off position whenever you shut down bike. They teach you that right up front if you take a rider training course and in fact check that you do it during the course.

When getting the raptor petcock, I know there are those who might disagree, but go to your local Yamaha dealer and order an OEM, there are far too many cheap, rip-off copies available online at much less money and they are often crap. Pay for the real thing.

Both my s40's have raptors and in fact when I got the 2011, it had the original petcock and a small hesitation problem on excelleration, new raptor cleaned that right up.

Once you install the raptor please develop the habit of shutting off fuel every time you shut down bike.

Kroil spray penetrating oil,,
let sit an hour
lightly tap it
pliers at the pivot, not out on the lever
gently try No Joy?
add penetrating oil,
hav another beer
tap,tap,tap
rotate,,

rinse and repeat as needed,
ride to the Yamaha shop,
spend just ubder thirty buck,,
dont buy anything other than genuine Raptor petcock,,

Ok, thanks for enlightenment to all you.

Two lessons learned:

First if in eighties (as I am), put a lot more muscle into turning petcocks...My Savage petcocks are MUCH harder to turn than other bikes I have owned....Now I have them moving.....Please forgive me for the false alarm..

Second:  order a Yamaha raptor petcock at the Yamaha dealer...is that all I need to ask for or is there a part number?

Embarrassed by my  error in not realizing how tightly the petcock fits.

Thank you.

What happens if it stays uncapped?

Uncapped = a hole in the carb.

It's literally a straight swap, just unbolt the old one (with tank off the bike). And bolt the Yammy part in.

Keep in mind, it will reduce the size of your reserve, as the tube on the tap is shorter than ours.

A packet of 'Vac Caps' costs a few bucks at the auto parts store. If I remember correctly, I used a 4mm cap. It just pushes on. You're covering a vacuum port so the pressure pulse is working in your favour in keeping it on.

ABSOLUTELY a straight swap
Just make sure the rubber seal ring is landing on a clean, smooth surface,
Remove plastic protective sleeves from new petcock

The rubber hose you have with a wooden dowell stuck in it, trimmed to fit, of course,,little zip ties,,yeee haa,,
