No spark
08/07/19 at 09:03:53

I got a 1987 savage, suddenly lost spark. Made sure the battery is charged, and the coil is getting power, key on engine off, the CDI grounds the coil, as i connect and disconnect the - terminal, no spark, may have a B+ voltage drop at the coil, gonna see this morning. Hope it's not a CDI, cannot find on E Bay, as they have 95 on only, as i'm selling the bike, and the buyer knows

Check your side stand switch.

It has been bypassed, i'm getting 8,5V coil + to the coil - , 12.1V at battery key on. Also coil- key on both terminals connected, there is resistance on the ground side too

12.1V is a low battery. It should be 12.6 at least, higher if it's a fully charged good battery. It's common for a low battery to crank the engine but not fire the plug.

Try some jumper cables from a car battery. Car engine OFF.

Same wire goes to the TCI and the coil.
If you got 8.5v, you are SOL on it starting.

The ignition will not spark the plug with those voltages.

A don't leave the key on without starting the bike it will ruin(fry /melt down) the ignition module ($500.00 !) and the guy's are right ,if you don't have about 10 volts at the coil while your starter is turning over you won't have any spark.

Going to try the car battery idea this morning, been way hot during the day to work on it, been leaving the CDI side of the coil disconnected with key on for any amount of time. Going to run a jumper to get a solid 12V to the coil to see if i get spark. Seems to be a voltage drop of 1.6V on both sides of the coil. Thanks for the help guys

Found the problem, the black wire that goes from the starter solenoid to the CDI somehow got disconnected, fixed it, now rums YEAH!

That wire sends power signal back to the ignition module when the starter runs and retards the spark timing to allow easier starting.
