More importantly , what is your inseam measurement? Mine is 34" and I suffered from the same hip cramps , there is only a couple of ways to relieve them ,they both involve changing your seating position so that your thighs become parallel to the ground . Either a seat that moves you higher or your butt back ,(HD sportster , triumph ,or adding to your stock seat bring the height up to that of the passenger and a custom cover ) or forward controls. either will shift some weight off your butt and toward your thighs and relieve the pressure and pain. I doubt changing gas tanks will help at all.

What's your age? Could be early sings of hip arthritis. I noticed a few years back that whenever I accelerated fast on my sportbike I had a severe pain in my left hip. Two years ago I noticed I was limping while playing golf. A year ago I had to stop running due to pain, so I went to the doctor and was told I have arthritis. Now I have pain all of the time.

In November I'm getting a hip replacement. All started with pain I noticed during riding.

Don't misunderstand me here, I love the Savage, especially the older 4-speeds...but it is a teeny, tiny bike...barely larger than a Rebel 250...it's just not a one-size fits all platform. You might be more comfortable on a Honda Shadow Aero or similar with some floorboards and highway pegs. I like having a bobbed Savage around to take camping or do local shows, but I sure as heck don't care to spend a weekend on one.

I've had one, an 05 model. Now I have an 02, and the handlebars and seat are both much better imho.. The thing I find I'm working against is my knees hanging out in the wind.

The Savage is not a standard....it is definitely a cruiser platform. The footpegs are located in front of the engine, the seat is behind the engine and mounted low, the handlebars are far above the top yoke, the front forks are at a shallow angle and the bike "flops" over into corners, the speedo is in the fuel tank, the rear tire is big and fat......etc. etc.

Do you mean BOW legged?

No, my legs are straight.
Soccer makes you bow legged.
But yes hips hurt, tailbone aches and makes those 1st few steps hard to take.
You need to lower your knees a bit and rock your hip forward to get a better position.
Either forward controls or mid/rear controls will do that.

Two things improved my bike for me

Changing rear tyre to a shinko 230 140/90/15 Softer, better riding and better road holding
The taller gearing and reduced vibration is a bonus also

Lifting the front of the seat 1 inch This transfers some of your body weight off your tailbone and on to the fleshy part of your inner thighs

On long trips I add a pad to the seat also

The rear shocks are not great but with the mods above gleaned from this site I find my Bikes comfort has been improved
