Trip to Harley Dealer
05/03/19 at 21:49:51

So I read the thread about the leaky exhaust and check the links. I previously wrote about my last trip to my local Harley dealer to try and get some exhaust clamps. With the latest posts having a link it was easy with very little research to bring up a Harley part number.

So to refresh, last time I went into my local Harley dealer to try and get a couple clamps. Me, I need a clamp for a 1 and 3/4" exhaust. Counter guy, can't help you what Harley model is it for and what year? Me, not for a Harley, it for a Suzuki LS650. Counter Guy, we don't sell parts for Japanese bikes. Me, ok it's for a Dyna. Counter guy, what model Dyna and what year. After long exchange like that went on like that he determines they don't have clamp and he can't help me.

Cut to today, from reading the discussion I have a Harley Part number. Walk in and hand the guy a slip of paper with the number on it. He enters it in computer, tells me immeduiately it's out of stock, but they will order it for me and they will be in in 3-4 days. Make of the story what you want.

T-bolt clamps
Available online

http://clampco.com/products/t-bolt.asp

It's too bad that the only way to buy a blasted exhaust clamp from Harley Davidson is to give them the year and model Harley it would be on.
Probably plenty of guys who could have handled your request, but, yeah,, it's kinda like that with the savage, too.

They seem to be really concerned about the year model when I want an oil filter.

Go to eBay and you can get a pair of Harley Clamps shipped to your door for around $11.

Thanks for the link Dave! Need to order new ones too

And a word of warning. Never take your Suzuki to a HD dealer for state inspection unless you want your bike back broken.

The inspector removes the gas tank and throws away a rubber bushing. That’s how. When I got the bike home it was missing a gas tank bushing and failed the inspection for a loose gas tank. Wasn’t loose when I rode it in there....

I am glad that KY doesn't inspect......I can only imagine what kind of issues they would find on my Cafe' conversion.  The bike is mechanically sound and safe to ride - but it has very little in common with the stock bike.

The sales guys at my local HD are nice people. I even let one of them take Thumpy for a ride. But the mechanics are totally not cool from my experience.
State inspection is such a PITa

We have a state inspection here in Texas but it is pretty straightforward. No hassles normally. Here I am saying this and mine is due this month, I hope I don't have to eat my words. Grin

What were they "inspecting" when they removed the tank?

Norm, I just recently had my bike inspected in the Houston area. It took about 5 minutes. They check the vin, the insurance, look at the tires, check that turn signal indicators work, ask me to beep the horn and ask me to switch from low to high beam and back. And that was it. I can live with that!

Yesterday
Dude walks out with me after I showed my insurance paper.

I turned the key on
He pointed
Showed him the front signals work.
High low beam
Horn
He walked to the rear
Signals check
Brake light check
He eyeballed the tires and we were done.
No VIN check
No high beam indicator check.
Got my registration sticker today.
I'll install after I scrape old ones off, and get the small river of epoxy that oozed on the area when I was gluing the reinforcement plate behind the cracked license plate.
