In the days of kick start and 80W dynamo, you wanted to make sure you weren't running a dead battery.
ASmpmeter shows whether the dynamo is charging the battery, or whether the system is draining the battery.

These daysm, with hi-power alternators, this is not a big issue any more.
I remember the days when French British cars would have a voltmeter or an ammeter (respectively) but no oil gauge...
