Problems starting and changing idle speeds
04/07/18 at 12:11:26

Hey everyone! Back again. I recently rebuilt the carb with new jets and gasket. I also replaced the fuel mixture screw. Since I've done that I've had trouble starting the bike and the idle speed changes to different speeds when it does. One thing I noticed about the mixture screw is that it is much longer than the original that came with the carb. Could that be causing it to run lean and therefore making it hard to start and run oddly? Thoughts?

I can put the original mixture screw back into the carb. I just replaced it because the head of the screw was pretty jacked up.

the idle speed changes to different speeds when it does

A cold engine will idle lower than when it's warm.
I have to keep mine idled up until it's warmed up,

There could be a lot of things causing an erratic idle.

An improper idle fuel mixture, an air leak, spacers/clip in the slide installed wrong, a sticky slide, a throttle cable that is catching on something as you turn the bars from side to side.

I don't know what to say about using a different idle fuel mixture screw.  As long as the tapered end is the same I guess it is OK - but I would buy a new stock one and use it.

If the new idle mixture screw is longer, it is obviously different.  It might also have a different taper.  If the taper is different, then you can't just set it at the same position as the existing mixture screw (i.e. 1.5 turns out, 2.0 turns out, 2.5 turns out, etc.).  Try to adjust the mixture screw to highest/best idle with the engine warmed up?  You might also want to check for vacuum leaks by straying the joints with carburetor cleaner or WD40 with the engine idling.

ADJUST with engine warmed up
Idle set lower than suggested.
